About Videos Not logged in -   Reply

Hi,

I have a lot of videos I'd like to upload. Most of them are in .AVI , .MPEG or .MOV formats. Any chance you could add those three to the supported list. Of course there's always the option of converting those to .WMV or .RM but it isn't easy. I realize that .WMV and .RM are suitable for streaming, but still I think that .AVI , .MPEG (.MPG) and .MOV should be supported. They are the mainstream formats for Mediaplayer, Realplayer and Apple Quicktime player. People could simply download the videos to their own PC and watch them there.

Another thing. I'd like to suggest that the thumbnail requirement be removed from uploading videos. I feel it's not needed there, and the work required to take a screenshot, crop and resize is not called for, since one picture doesn't give a good idea about what the video is like (in my opinion).

regards
Tero

Hi Tero,

Crop and resize are automatic... you could add a huge big image and it will be properly resized and reduced. This is done via the ImageMagick library. You are, however correct, videos don't need them.

And yes, the reason for the specific formats it's because I want to reduce complexity, however mov and mpeg will be supported. We use Helix DNA Server, it streams almost every format, but because I'm using the open source version of it I need to license the code to add the aditional formats, i'm in the process of licensing it though, so give me two weeks.

For inmediate streaming the format we support at this very moment is rm. encoding is done easily using cameo and you could download it from www.helixcommunity.org. Cameo acepts almost any video format and converts it to .rm format. This encoder is free, open source so maybe I'll be getting a commercial license and offer it as a download here at simradar for users to encode their own videos.

Tero,

I just noticed you uploaded 18 beauties :) man, I better send you the MCP right away!! WONDERFUL videos! I will, however, wait till I have the plugin to stream wmv, which hopefully will be before the end of the week.

I will try to use the Cameo.

However, be warned. The videos I uploaded today are "crap" compared to the stuff I have available in .AVI, .MPEG and .MOV formats. I hope to be able to send them as well... Tongue I really do.

I have some cockpit videos from Finnair flights me or my buddies have been on, videos from my visit to the 757 simulator and a bunch of other stuff...

Tero

ps. I used the same picture for thumbnail, because I could not capture anything from the videos. The capturing screen showed the player correctly, but the rest of the area was BLACK! Go figure. I think the thumbnail option could perhaps be removed ;).

I just downloaded CAMEO, and actually already converted two small clips into .RM format.

The only downside is that the conversion takes about as much time as the clip is long. So to convert a 45 minute clip, it will take at least that...

But, I will start converting. I hope I get credited for the .wmvs I sent yesterday though ;)

Tero

ps. I have some pretty HOT stuff here :).

You Will, but again... I can not approve those wmv yet, otherwise users will think the streaming is not working ;)

Ok, I hope you remember them when you get the license... Uploading 18 videos takes some time still.

I have now 40 new videos converted to .rm, ranging from 300k to 40MB. And this is not everything. Should I just start uploading ? ;).

I could, of course, convert the already uploaded videos to .rm and reupload, but if you will get the license sorted and credits ok, it might not be wise.
What do you think ?

Tero

Ok, two small ones uploaded. Let's test the workings.

Do you think that I should reupload the 18 videos in .rm ?

If you have them already encoded yes... rm is even better quality than wmv don't you think?

I don't have them encoded... should do that first. Also, reuploading takes time :).

But, if you promise to stall the AVSIM announcement a bit, I'll be happy to reupload and convert them. <-- JOKE :D

Just checked the .RM. Played very nicely.

I could of course convert the already uploaded videos, it's a bit of a hassle, but at least they will get online sooner than later. I see that you already (accidentally ?) approved one of those WMVs.

Hi,

Doesn't work. Still wants a thumbnail. The field for the thumbnail is still there, and I tried to upload a third smaller video with that field left empty, and it wouldn't accept it.

Great!

I think I'll just convert the 18 wmvs and reupload them as well.

I'll probably start tonight or tomorrow. It's getting late already in Finland, but latest tomorrow I'll upload the ~ 60 videos :).

As you wish ;)

You definitely liked the way the rm streamed right? :) very good not having to wait till the file downloads completely to play it!

Yeah, I liked the streaming a lot! It works perfectly now, and I'm sure others will enjoy these videos a lot.

In addition to what I'm next uploading (tomorrow), I have another 15 videos from real 757 and DC9 simulators I visited, sized from 10MB to 40MB.

They will be up next, once I get the 58 videos uploaded first.

Hi,

I also have ~ 20-30 videos that have a copyright in the beginning, for example a340.net. Would it be ok to upload them as well ? I have seen these videos all over the internet, so I don't think it would be that big of a deal. Besides, they are great videos.

Don't even think about it. Same rules as for downloads apply. In fact, some of the videos I was validating (the wmv) contain copyright notices... nabojo or something like that.. that's free advertising, try to upload videos that do not identify source anywhere and where no copyright is visible or owned by anyone.

The WWW address is NOT a copyright.

I think you should validate them. There are a lot of videos going around, that have some kind of URL in the beginning. That doesn't mean that someone owns them. They are just an ad in the beginning. Who cares about it ?

Oh btw, I have about 100 videos here, and I have been preparing them and uploading already for several hours. The last ones are the biggest, so I doubt that I will have time to upload everything today, though.
