Added 2 more gb ram Not logged in -   Reply

I did receive today, my new P5E X38 motherboard, and 2gb Corsair Dominator
PC8500 ram.

Since this EVGA 680i, after coming back from the dead, is still running, I
decided I would power it down ( for the first time since getting it going
again on Sat), insert the two new sticks of ram ( already have 2gb of
Corsair Extreme PC8500 ram in it), bringing my total to 4gb, and if the
system powered up fine, I would run it a while, if it got stuck on the C1
error again ( memory controller issue on this board), then I would go ahead
and upgrade with the new mb.

Well, it went fine, the system is up and running with 4gb of ram. Granted ,
XP Pro ( 32 bit ), only shows 2.75gb as available ram, but I knew that would
probably be the case with the way 32 bit windows allocates ram, and it's
limit.

Anyways, I flew a quick hop from Nashville to Memphis. Whilst I can't say
the extra ram helped performance in the fps dept, I can say it seems to have
smoothed things out somewhat. Before, sometimes while looking around with my
Track IR, or switching to exterior views, I would see slight stutters, not
major but just a little here and there. That seems to have gone away for the
most part, and things don't seem to pop into view as much as they used too.
I am sure I will notice some little improvements in other areas as I get
more time with it.

Just an initial observation.

I guess I will continue to run this EVGA 680i for a while , and see how it
does. Perhaps sometime after the first of the year, I will get a new
processor and then do the mb upgrade, unless this thing gets flakey again
beforehand.

Don,

Since you did mention the site view with popping up. What distance do you
have the horizon on or for site distance? If you bring it back some lets
say to 20-30 miles maybe it wont be so bad. Also, what about the cloud
details? Try lowering them just a drop to see if this will also help in the
frame rates. Now, since you did mention frame rates "What percentage do you
have the AI Planes??? This affects frame rates as well.

Just asking to see if this might bring an overall help without effecting the
visual for sceneries.

I'm awaiting my order for 2gb of additional ram to bring my total up
to 4gb. I too did a test recently adding the same modules to my
system when I was building one for a work colleague and like you didnt
notice an overall increase in frames in FS9 but did notice that
TrackIR and changing views was indeed quicker. I hope to get them
either today or tomorrow. On my recent XP installation it showed up
as 3.25gb, I hope to get the same on Vista Ultimate. All these
upgrades over the last few months has brought my little puppy of a pc
up to the tune of around £2500. You could by a half decent car for
the cost of my 'toy'

By pressing Ctrl+Alt+Delete I get Windows Taakbeheer (Dutch) which shows in
graphs the use of CPU's, 4x Quad, and a graph for memory use and this shows
that my 2GB 8600 RAM memory seldon works on more than 50%. I think that 4GB
is more than you needed for FSX.(or am I wrong?)

I am sure it is more than I needed, when this mb seemed to be dead, stuck on
the C1 led ( memory controller issue), when I ordered the new mb I just went
ahead and got two more sticks of ram, just in case by chance one or both of
them had gone bad. Of course the board is working again, so thought I would
just throw it in there and see what effect it might have. I doubt FSX, or
any program I ran, would benefit greatly from it, but I do see some subtle
differences in my short time with it ( FSX) since adding the ram.

I have a very hectic rest of this week and all of next week, so will
probably be a little while before I get to do much more with it.

Just an FYI:

Specs:
Asus P5N32E-SLI (680)

E6859 @3.8 ghz
2x1g OCZ FLEX XLC 9200 water cooled
2x EVGA 8800GTX (modded bios 640/2100/1674)
XP 32

FS9 (fsx simply occupies space on my hard drive at this point).

Before, the only driver that would not cause shimmering on and around
taxiways was 97.94. Also, applying SLI would do nothing to improve
fps. My fps at that point were ~60 in airports, and up to ~180 at
altitude. Even at these framerates, I would experience "micro
stutters" when taxiing.

On a whim I tried 169.01 and WOW...
Now when I enable SLI, everything is glass smooth at AA = enhance
application settings, sli32x. The framerates are the same.

I tried 169.04 and noticed an fps decrease so it was back to 169.01
for me. IQ is also excellent.

You might want to try this driver specially if you've got SLI.

Just a note, the FRY's near me just got in a shipment of QX9650's but
they won't sell them until 11/12 which is the official release date. I
can see them through the parts cage behind the counter, so near and
yet so far.

At least I have a few more days before I come home with one and my
wife kills me..

I hope to get a few days in before she looks at the credit card
activity.

But honey, it's 45nm and uses four cores. I had to have one!!!!

Nice knowing you all..

Nuke

Don,

Try this one:

>Cloud Draw Distance = High = 100mi
>Detailed Clouds
>Cloud Coverage Density = Maximum

Why would you want FS to draw clouds 100 miles away when you cant even see
it. Bring it down to about 50 miles and see how that works out. Even in
FS9 I have mine set to 50 miles. Start out at 50 and test it down to at
least to draw to 30 miles. Wonder how much frame rates you could gain?

Cloud Coverage set at Max. This might be one of the bigger Frame Rate hogs
as well. I dont think this Cloud Details would effect frame rates but I'm
not sure you would want to lower this setting. Cant hurt to try though.

The only thing I can see other then the clouds would be your:

> Airport Vehicle Density = Maximum

since the higher detailed airports are always frame rate hogs you might want
to lower this setting one notch lower to see how it works out on top of the
other slight adjustments. Combine these slight adjustments and you might
get a winner. Just remember where they were before you started to change
things so you could always go back if it doesnt work out.
