Around the world in C182 Leg 1 Not logged in -   Reply

I have begun my around the world flight in a C182S, hopefully will finish it
before FS2006 is released.

First flight St. Landry Airport/Ahart Field to Baton Rouge/Ryan Field.
Weather was marginal VFR.

Not sure what you mean by 1x sim or higher?

As for wheather MS will issue a FS2006, they have been two years without our
money, FS 2006 is coming.

hi!

that would be my question,too.

1X or higher means if you fly in real time or if you
speed the sim up. you can speed it up to X4 and
the 4 h flight just takes one h ..

my 2nd question is, if you fly in zulu tme or in your own lokal time
or if you care about the time at all...

the 3rd question is if you plan one leg after the other or if you just
fallow your nose VFR.

i am on the rod with the 73 heading vladivostok, maybe japan and
kadena AFB... but there is no plan when and which way.

keep me informed with some more pics! Smile

happy landings!
tom.

Speed I am using is 1X. Will have to save and come back to complete between
Canada and UK via Greenland, Iceland, and the Faroes.

Right now I am using local time. Since I never know when I will get to fly,
I will proably change later on. What I did before was start the first leg I
did in the morning local. If I flew later that day, I would add an hour or
two to the time I arrived and use that time.

I am going to use real weather the whole way. I fly VFR when I can, IFR if
I need to. I have real world VFR charts for at least half of my trip.

I am doing legs that average from an hour to a half hour long. My time is
limited, so I grab a flight whenever I am able. Right now I don't think I
will have time to fly anymore until this weekend. I hope to put in eight to
twelve legs this weekend.

I tried this several years ago on FS2002 and made it as far as Paris, then I
got occupied and before I knew it FS 2004 came out. Picked a better time of
year to start this time, last time I started in winter and had several bad
storms from New Jersey to the Faroes.

The pic is leg two Baton Rouge/Ryan to Hammond Muni. The great thing is I
looked out the window and the sky outside looked exactly like the sky I was
flying in.

Blue Skies,
Bob

How do you determine what route you will take for such a lengthy trip. Do
you research this on your own, or is there a list of routes out there
somewhere?

I have a general route in mind and sit down with the charts and plan two or
three legs at a time. Since I never know if I will have a half hour or hour
and a half, I have to be flexible. I would prefer not to save in flight,
but will have to, especially during the Canada to Greenland to Iceland to
Faroes part of the flight.

Unfortunately I had an accident and messed up my foot and leg and have been
unable to sit at the computer for any long period of time, so I haven't
flown in over a month and hopefully will be back on track in a week or two.

Logically my next question would be...where do you get your charts?

I ordered most of them from NACO. http://naco.faa.gov/

I have an entire set of US WACs, Sectionals less than four years old for
about two thirds of the US, and ONCs for Europe, Japan, Central America,
Caribbean not covered by WACs, and northern South America. Will order a few
more ONCs as time goes by.

I also have about forty state aeronautical charts and an assortment of state
airport directories. Go to
http://www.dot.state.mn.us/aero/avoffice/statepages.html for links to the
state aviation offices. If they don't have a link for ordering the chart,
find a contact email. Most have charts and directories for free, some for
postage and handling. If you live in the US, all you have to do is ask
politely and they are happy to send you charts plus sometimes more. Not
sure if they will send them overseas. These are sectional or WAC quality.

Years ago I knew some pilots and they passed down about a third of the
United States that was obsolete for real flight, those are almost twenty
years old now and even obsolete for flight simulator. If you know a pilot
who can pass down obsolete charts,. you can save money. I am trying to get
a source right now for obsolete Canadian charts, the price for them new is
unreal.

You might also try http://maps.myairplane.com/default.asp for some online US
charts.

For free instrument charts the NACO site has them on line
http://naco.faa.gov/index.asp?xml=naco/online/d_tpp , plus I have a website
that I haven't updated in about a year, but most of the links are still good
http://www.geocities.com/bobandrepont/iap.htm for international ones. You
might also check the links to the regional member webpages for www.ivao.org
and www.vatsim.net most of them have approach charts for their area.

Wow you really researched this. How many hours did it take you to plan this

Hard to say because I didn't do it all at once. I basically took an atlas
and planned an approximate route and now I do the detail as I fly usually
two or three legs ahead of where I am. I may also see something that looks
interesting and deviate from my course.

Another decision I had to make was whether or not to avoid the Appalachians
in America. The first time I tried this, I flew due east along the gulf
coast and then to Jacksonville, Fla and turned north. Then up the coast to
the Hudson River, then into Canada and to Greenland. This time I am going
on a more NE course through Mississippi, Alabama, and Georgia, avoiding the
coast and "cutting the corner".

I will probably start flying again this weekend if can keep my leg down for
a long period of time without much pain or swelling.

Will have to avoid Washington this time, look at the commotion they caused
this morning.
