Back up/ reinstall FSX? Not logged in -   Reply

I'll be reinstalling my machine over the weekend; and I'd like to keep my
current progress in the flight school and missions,

I'm not to worried about keeping graphic or control settings as I'll be
changing OS (I'm going to Vista 64) and joystick (Saitek yoke, I'm wondering
how I'll adjust to pedals).

But I'd like to keep my MS PPL and other badges and stuff from the missions
so far.

What do I back up?

To guard against losses from FSX crashes, I regularly back up
'GrantedRewards.bin' and 'Logbook.bin'. I think these are the only two
you need to save.

In XP they are located in 'My Documents\Flight Simulator X'; I don't
know where they are in Vista.

I have a logbook.bin, but no GrantedRewards.bin, and I have completed many!

I would like to copy the rewards from my old computer to the new one but the
file mentioned doesn't exist. This is the second time I'm going to lose all
my rewards unless someone can suggest a solution.

Thanks.

'GrantedRewards.bin' only exists if they show up in the "Awards" tab.
If your do show up, and the file still doesn't exist, then I haven't a
clue as to where they are coming from. Are you using Vista? If so,
then I am told that Vista stores "stuff" in various places that XP
doesn't have (or are named differently).

Re: Back up/ reinstall FSX? [In reply to Grand_Poobah] Not logged in -   Reply

I checked in My Docs\Fligh Simulator X Files\ on my old XP machine, there is no
GrantedRewards.bin file there. I have received rewards though, such as
'stunt pilot' for landing on roof of a bus and many others.
Could the file live somewhere else or have a different name?
If I can locate it, I assume I can copy it to my new Vista machine and have
all my previous rewards without having to repeat the missions.

Thanks for your help,
Adrian (watterman)

Adrian:

As an experiment, I cut my copy of 'GrantedAwards.bin' from the My
Documents\Flight Simulator x files and started the game. To my suprise,
I still had all my awards being displayed. This really got my curiosity
up so I did some investigating. It appears that there are TWO copies of
this file: 1) where we though it should be (My Documents), and, 2)
"Documents and settings\<logon name>\Application Data\Microsoft\FSX".
When I 'removed' that one, they all disappeared from the "Awards' tab
except for the 'Total Hours' and 'Number of Landings' awards (which the
game gets from your logbook).

I suspect that what happens is that the "internal" BIN file (the
application data folder) gets the run-time data and, when you close the
game, a new one is written to your My Documents folder.

What you could do is look on your "old" computer for the file in
Application Data instead of My Documents.

BTW, until I put the "real" GrantedAwards back into the Application Data
folder none of them came back. Even after I put the "real" one back
into the My Documents folder. Very weird.

Furthermore, if you have started FSX once after a re-boot, the
"application data" copy of the BIN file is locked. You cannot
rename/alter or delete it because FSX has been run. You have to do a
clean reboot in order to change the current BIN file with a 'new' one.

I just RDP'ed into my old XP machine and found the GrantedRewards.bin in the
location you are talking about (Application Data\FSX).

I'll have to wait till tonight when I'm home and copy that over to my Vista
machine and see if that works. (I'm at work atm, in Aus). This could be very
good news.
I'll report back on my findings asap.

Great find GP. Thanks.

Good news GP.
I went home for lunch and copied GrantedRewards.bin over to the new Vista
machine and all my completed missions and rewards are intact.
The location for vista is: C:\Users\[UserName]\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\FSX\

Thanks for your help.
regards,
watterman.
