NEVER KNOW WHEN TO DESCEND? if you are flying a jet i.e. 737 or other such a/c you should use a simple equation. known as the 1 in 3 rule i.e. if you are cruising at 35,000 ft and want to descend you would use this equation: 35 (remove the 3 zeros) X 3 = 105 therefore you would start your descent at 105nm from the airport. this is displayed on the GPS whether you are using a VFR flight plan with waypoints or just taking a direct route. with IFR ATC will descend you regardless.
