FSX, Dual-core and AGP?... Not logged in -   Reply

Hello all,

I am currently running FS9 on a very low/mid range setup (Athlon XP
2500+, 1GB ram, Nvidia 6800GT 256mb AGP) and getting decent enough
fps. I am intrigued by FSX, but read enough about performance issues
on less-than top end hardware to bother trying to run it on my setup.
Thus I am considering a "budget upgrade" - basically replacing the
motherboard/CPu with a mid-range dual-core processor (AMD or
Intel???), adding a gb of memory, and keeping the AGP 6800GT video
card. I figure I can do this upgrade for $200-$300.

The question is, is it worth it? Will FSX be playable on such a
system with mid-level scenery settings? Will the AGP 6800GT graphics
card pull the rest of the system down? I know most would argue that
it's more wise to "bite the bullet" and dump the AGP card for a new
PCIe MB and video card. Unfortunately, that is just not in my budget
at this time.

Does anyone have any experience running a newer dual-core processor
system with an AGP video card? Since the availablity of motherboards
to support this type of setup are very scarce, I'd guess not too may
people are doing it.

Thanks,
Pat

People here say that the processor is more important than the video card for
FSX. Intel dual processors seem to be better than AMD at the moment. I
would not think you would find an AGP motherboard that would use a dual
core processor but I have often been wrong before.

I find FSX acceptable most of the time. My set up is a little better than
your current PC and the one you are planning is much better. It all depends
how you use it. If you use add-on scenery and aircraft and go to a big
airport in the USA, you might be disappointed. It also depends what frame
rate you prefer. 24 fps is fine for me.

I have AMD Sempron 3000+
Nvidia 86000 GT (I think it is PCI Express)
2 GB memory.

This is a bit better than your current system, but not a lot.

If I stay away from large US cities and word capitals such as London,
I get acceptable frame rates from FSX with SP1.

I have auto gen scenery set to zero, as it about halves my frame rates
and I don't like imaginary buildings scattered at random.

Frame rate is capped at 24 fps. Resolution is 1024 * 768. I have no add-on
scenery.

Settings:
Scenery complexity: extremely dense
Autogen density: zero
airline traffic density: 100 %
G.A. traffic density: 100 %
road vehicle density: 36 %
airport vehicle density: medium
ships: 15 %

Flying the default Beech Baron.

Moorabbin, Australia (YMMB)
looking at virtual cockpit: 24 fps
spot view, sitting on runway: 24 fps
spot view, climb out: 11 fps
spot view, fly back over airport: 24 fps
spot view, fly low level around city of Melbourne: 12 to 24 fps

Seatle, USA (KBFI)
looking at virtual cockpit: 8 fps
spot view, sitting on runway: 6 fps
spot view, climb out: 11 fps
spot view, fly back over airport: 5 to 8 fps
spot view, fly low level around city of Seatle: 7 to 10 fps

By the way, what is that strange building in the middle of Melbourne?
The one that looks like a small sports stadium with a large metal tower
growing out of it.

To answer my own question, a few minutes with Google Images shows it to be
The Melbourne Arts Centre on St Kilda Rd, Melbourne.
