FSX.. ultimate card for smoothest frame rate? Not logged in -   Reply

Given my Dual Core2 1.86 CPU and 4gb of memory.. What would be the
best video card to get the smoothest frame rate with full details
turned up on everything? I'd also probably run this in a window.. so
I could utilize both of my two widescreen LCDs... I'm also guessing i
would probably going with 1920x1200 style resolution (i used to run at
1024x768, but now with 1080p and wide screen, i'd probably want to max
these out).

I'm guessing the 8800GTX with 512MB of memory (probably $600)?

A few months ago, from what I read, even the top of the line card at
the time could handle things at full detail level and still maintain
at least 30 fps.

Cheers

The new 8800 GT or the 8800GTS, stay away from the GTX

Then how do you explain the fact that almost every nVidia card
outperforms ATI by a handsome margin?

Hi notspecified,

True, but the 8800 Ultra is handy for larger resolutions, such as 2520 x
1600, on a Dell 30" widescreen monitor.

I should have mentioned, currently i have an 8600GT with the 1.86
cpu.. Maybe for now the cheaper bet is to swap CPU's.. actually.. i
was kinda hoping to go quad core and 2.6ghz.. but this may not be too
beneficial, as far as multicores go for this application anyway.

The price is low, relatively speaking though.. i think they are under
$300 or $350 now for that cpu.

Just for the time being, have a look at the Core2Duos (the faster ones).

For the time being, better than the Quad Core CPUs, mate, IMHO.

The GT seems to have half the bandwidth of my GTX Ultra XXX which
pumps out 110Gb/s
It must help somewhere

Your older motherboard may not be compatible with the newer cpus.
What type of cpu have you at the moment AMD or Intel?

but you put 2 in sli mode and you beat the ultra in benchmark for less
cost.

low of 480 to a high of well over $800. Standardclock at 575 MHz to a
high OC of 750 MHz

8800 Ultra: a BFG Tech with a clock of only 612 MHz (slowest listed)
for $800. Yet the fastest clock of 660 MHz was also the cheapest at
$589

OTOH these things have 128 stream processors.

Your mileage may vary.
I have an 8800 GTS 640 in one Athlon X2 6000 and an ATI X1950ST 256 in
an identical machine. The little X1950XT is faster than my 8800 by 10
to 20%. Now I have to get the acceleration pack on this machine to see
how they stack up after SP-2 and the pack.

I was always under the understanding that 2x graphics card did not
equal 2x graphic power
