If I understand correctly, neither FS9 nor FSX make use of SLI. However, I
also believe that GPU memory has a big impact. In the circumstances I
suspect that I would be better off finding a way to trade up my 7800gtx SLI
256mb each, to a single 8800gtx or ultra 712mb (subject to winning the
lottery, of course). What is the general consensus please?

Thanks, guys and gals

Rich

I have two EVGA Superclocked 8800 GTX cards in SLI and have ran them
singly and in SLI mode to see the difference. There is 'some' gain in raw
performance in SLI, but not much to brag about. The main difference is in
the smoothness of operation when in SLI. In very dense scenery, it is very
apparent. SLI is NOT implemented in ANY sim or game. It is done in hardware
and drivers outside the game or sim. FSX, contrary to what some may say, is
very dependent on CPU AND GPU performance. FSX will react very well to
adding some graphics horsepower up to the point that the CPU becomes the
bottleneck and vice-versa. So, getting to your question........ A single
8800GTX is probably more powerful than your two 7800s in SLI or at the very
least, equal. The Ultra would no doubt be faster. Not knowing what CPU you
have, I will just take a guess that it is probably an early Dual Core or
later era P4/Pentium D based on the age of your video cards. If this is the
case, then you might want to wait a bit until you can do an upgrade to a CPU
that will not bottleneck your video card's performance. It is all a
balancing act with FSX. You were probably mixing up the fact that FSX does
not natively support multi-core processors with SLI implementation since SLI
is not dependent on any program code. I run a Q6600 overclocked from 2.4Ghz
to 3.35Ghz with the GTXs and get pretty good results. I did have an E6600
running at 3.5Ghz in this system and the Q6600 even at a slightly lower
speed runs FSX better and smoother. I do have the Accelerator Pack
installed. My P4 at 3.6Ghz is pathetically slow compared to either of the
above processors in FSX with an 8800 GTS so there is some benefit to the
C2Ds and Quads in FSX.

Thanks Ed, thats very helpful.

I'm running a dual core AMD +4400, and I know that a change to an intel
dual core is currently the way to go, but that means a mobo change too, and
probably the memory as well. I should have mentioned that I also use the
Matrox TH2G at 3840x1024 so GPU oomph will help. The GPU upgrade may be a
quick fix, although not particularly cheap.

Thanks again,

Rich
