Thanks Ed, thats very helpful. I'm running a dual core AMD +4400, and I know that a change to an intel dual core is currently the way to go, but that means a mobo change too, and probably the memory as well. I should have mentioned that I also use the Matrox TH2G at 3840x1024 so GPU oomph will help. The GPU upgrade may be a quick fix, although not particularly cheap.
