I cannot thank you enough for this post - I had almost the identical problem trying to install FSX:Acceleration but compounded the problem when I decided to delete and re-install FSX itself - and then hit the same problem trying to re-install FSX - which had been running for 13 months without much in the way of problems. Did what you suggested, created new Admin user - disconnected from network, and used phone activation and it succeeded - so at least I have FSX fully operational again - next up will be the Acceleration re-install - but this got me back in the air - thanks again!
