FSX Acceleration Not logged in -   Reply

Wow all the hype! I saw no performance increase or any benefit to
FPS after installing FSX Acceleration. OK it comes with an EH-101
which has an engine flaw of some kind and the Wings of power P-51 is
better than the Acceleration one. OK it does come with extra
missions and the like, but they are for the 3 new AC.

As for DX10, well if you want FSX slideshow then switch this baby
on!! I got an FPS drop from 25 FPS to 5 !!! (and yes I do have a
DX10 card, quad core, blah blah blah spec)

So my initial opinion is save your money and go buy the wife a
present! Then if she is happy she might buy you a full motion
simulator for Christmas and then you can just forget about FSX!

Although there are many who are having great results with DX10 & Vista, I am
not one of them. BUT, just the difference in DX9/XP is worth the price of
admission. I've had very little problems with my system so I doubted that I
d see much improvement. Boy, was I wrong. Faster, smoother, better with no
blurries or any other issues under XP.

I agree Vista is a slide show BUT as I said, I also read of a lot of folks
who love it.

It's worth the $$ but no guarantee that it will work perfectly for you.

Hi Vic,

Yes, the experiences are very variable, and I wonder why. I have FSX/Vista
The acceleration pack made very little difference. But my frame rates since
MS released support for multicores, have been fine. I have almost no addons
yet. My sliders are maxed except for water effects. I have frame rates
maxed at 20fps and I usually sit in the range 18-20fps.

Now if I can just get the $#$%$ sound working properly.

Try changing the theme from Vista to Windows Classic when running
FSX under Vista. The change will be greater for systems with just 1 GB
of RAM. I was experimenting on a system with P4 2.4GHz, 128 MB ATI
9600XT, and 1GB of RAM and had some big FPS increases. The switch
to Windows Classic frees up several hundred MB, which can make a big
difference to a RAM deficient system.

I agree : FSX-SP1 + Acceleration on Vista-DX10 results in 10%/15%
decrease on FPS. And DX10 implementation is really poor :

Bell 206 - at dawn on New York City (from La Guardia to Manhattan at
500 AGL) - Anisotropic filtering + AA - Scenery sliders full right
(excepted mesh resolution 5m. - texture resolution 1 m.)
Traffic airlines = 0%, airport = 20%, roads = 50%, boats = 15%

FSX-SP1+Vista+DX9 -> 22 to 25 fps
FSX-SP1+Acceleration+Vista+DX9(preview DX10 unchecked)-> 27 to 30 fps
FSX-SP1+Acceleration+Vista+DX10(preview DX10 checked)-> 19 to 22 fps

Apparently no more progressive taxi on airports, flickering on
taxiways textures (bad Z buffering). Aspect of sea textures is
different but not better. Fences around airports are opaque.
At night, there is a better contrast and the car lights on roads are
more brilliant. But the bridges are semi-transparent at night!

All this with a decent rig :
MB Asus P5B Deluxe - Core2Duo 6700 - 2GB OCZ DDR2 PC-8500 @ 1066 MHz
Asus EN 8800 GTX - 768 MB Driver Forceware 163.69 WHQL
Vista Home Basic stripped (no Aero, no security stuff)

So, DX10 doesn't get a better picture and decreases FPS Frown
(at least with 163.69 driver for the time being, but 8800 GTX is now
an old graphic card, next generation is just behind the door)

Ergo, no more DX10 for me, no more DX10 = Vista not necessary...

Well... back to WXP + DX9 Smile

Very disappointing, Paul Taylor's blog was more appealing about it !

LOL! That's the first thing I did when I got Vista - I really don't like the
new look so I disabled all the security and set it to classic.

When I get time I'll play with they sliders but I left them as I have them
in XP - water is 2High and most sliders full except autogen and traffic.

I added an el cheapo Diamond MM sound card to my onboard sound and set it up
for voice/headset only. Left OB sound to everything else/speakers. Works
like a champ and no sound stutters!

Smoother, prettier, andnicer it shold be, but Vista is inherrently
about 10% slower by most reports including gamers and the trade
journals so I'm surprised you see that.

Hi Pierre,
This may seem like a simple question, but what is "preview DX10 unchecked"
and "preview DX10 checked" all about? I have DX10 installed on my machine,
and have a DX10-compatible video card, and FSX with the Acceleration Pack
installed. But I don't see a reference to any kind of "DX10 preview"
anywhere. What am I missing?

In "settings" on FSX start screen then "customize",
or FSX menu/options/settings/display - tab Graphics :
on the left you have screen options like 1280 x 1024 x 32, on the
right you have 4 check options under Global texture resolution :
- Preview Direct X 10
- Lens Flare
- Light bloom
- Advanced animations

Preview Direct X 10 appears only if you have software and hardware
DX10 capable, that is Windows Vista (all version) and DX10 capable
graphic card (8xxx nVidia or ATI 2xxx )

DirectX 10 is embedded with Vista, you can't "install" it on XP.

Hope this helps Smile

Thanks Pierre!
I have had the Acceleration Pack installed for a week now, and never knew
that I wasn't using DX10! I was initially disappointed, because the graphics
didn't look all that different. Now I have "preview DX10" checked, and it
looks much nicer. It was nice of Microsoft to put this in the installation
instructions...Thanks again.
