FSX Acceleration experiences Not logged in -   Reply

I have loaded this enhancement onto our Kiwi Flight Simulator (see it
here: http://www.alexisparkinn.com/flight_simulator.htm ) and am
generally pleased. I have found several bugs, however:

- The P-51 Mustang can lock up when you put the flaps down. The noise
of the flap motor simply loops, the flaps don't move.

- The menus have "gone fuzzy" on me a few times. The writing turns to
something that looks like Klingon, and the only fix is to exit and
restart the program. The planes still fly fine when this happens, but
it's weird.

- FSX has actually rebooted my computer on one occasion, while flying
the Mustang. It froze, I briefly saw a Blue Screen of Death
(something I haven't seen since Win98) with lots of scrolling text,
and then *foosh* -- the whole thing rebooted. I've not seen that
happen in WinXP before.

- Flights saved from Missions cannot be "seen" to fly from the "Load"
choices when you want to fly them. They CAN be seen when you're
saving another flight, in the list, but they are not listed as choices
when you want to load and fly them later. Very strange.

- Cockpits in the new planes (the FA-18 and the P-51) cannot be
undocked and moved to a second screen. You have open a New View, open
one of the virtual cockpits, and move THAT view to the second screen.
This works fine, but virtual cockpits are much more memory intensive,
which slows the sim unnecessarily.

There is much to like, however. In no particular order:

- The F/A-18 is simply awesome. Lots of fun, and it's been a big hit
with hotel guests.

- Everything runs MUCH more smoothly. Punching through a cloud at 800
knots LOOKS GOOD on a 104" projection screen -- no small
accomplishment!

- Landing/taking off from the carrier is fun and challenging.

- The Reno Air Race tutorial is very good.

Questions for the group:

- How do I find the aircraft carrier (ANY aircraft carrier?) outside
of the missions? I would like to set up and save some flights to/
from/off the carrier, but I can't find one in any of the choices!

- Is there a way to save a mission into the "saved flights" section?

- What's the best way to navigate in FSX? GPS? What's your preferred
way to fly to other airports?

Thanks,

Try going to the following airfield and flying around a bit. I can start up
FSX and get you some detailed instructions if you need them. I don't know
if it has arreter wires and catapults for the new system, the Acceleration
Pack is not available here in England for a week or two.

works fine for me - ditto the menu issue

Had similar experience but changed video drivers and hasn't happened since.

LOVE the F/A-18 - now if Icould just learn to land it on the carrier.

As I understand it - the existing carriers (near San Diego and San
Francisco - there are others, Hawaii I think) do not have arresting cables
or catapult launch. Someone posted a way to export the mission carrier to
the regular FSX area but I don't have the link. But it seems doable.

I guess that's personal preference but I use the GPS. It's pretty easy to
type in the airport ID and get a direct line to it.

Download "aicarriers1.zip" and\or "aicarriers2.zip" from the
Avsim library. They will put the FSX carriers ( moving ) into
your FSX world.

Once you have those packages, go to the authors site and
check out his AI Boat utility that lets you place FSX ships,
including the carrier, anywhere you want and define the
sailing routes using Google Earth. It's pretty slick.

Can anyone re-post how to do this? The carriers are VERY cool, and it
would sure be nice to be able to set them up for our guests.

Any idea why -- when you "save" a mission -- it APPEARS to be saving,
when it's really not?

Saving a mission half-way through (as a saved flight) would/should be
a very useful thing!

Go to the Avsim library. Get "aicarriers1.zip" and "aicarriers2.zip".

These packages use the FSX CVN and destroyer and crusier. If you
have SP2 installed the CVN will have the cables and enhanced cats.

The "aicarriers2.zip" package enables you to place a carrier fleet
( chose any one of several configurations" at the current location
of your aircraft in free flight.

You can adjust the course of the fleet using a drop-down menu
while in flight.

Once you've downloaded one or both of those packages, go to the authors
site
and look for his "AI Boat Utility" that lets you place a carrier or
any other FSX ship, in any combinations you wish, anywhere you
wish and define thier sailing course(s) using Google Earth.
A truely worthy package for those that want CVN's in thier
FSX world.

I have added 3 CVN battle groups cruing off the Golden Gate
so when I'm in the mood for a few traps/launches all I need to
do is fly out the "Gate" and start searching the horizon for
one of my battle groups.

FYI, the FSX model used is "veh_carrier01_high_detail_sm".
It's in your "Simoblects\Boats" directory.

Thanks -- I'll try it!
