FSX SP1 Acceleration Activation Error Not logged in -   Reply

I have over 300 hours with FSX and was excited to get the Acceleration Pack
until I tried to start it.

I got and "Unexpected error preventing Activation - ERROR: 1-80004005"
Thought it might be the add ons so I removed everything and reinstalled FSX,
SP1 and then Acceleration. It happened again. I did get 30 minutes before
it shut me down.

Anyone have any ideas on how I get past this Activation error or is it the
software?

80004005 is a generic error for "can't connect to database". Sounds like the
trouble is on their end.

I received the same error yesterday after installing. Acceleration never did
ask for activation code and after my 30 minutes was up received error code
1-80004005.

Thinking that it might be a network/server issue, I've uninstalled and
reinstalled 1 day later with the same result. Anybody else having this
problem and is there any solution?

I got some help from a gent on the AVSIM forum and he suggested editting the
registry as follows:

1) with regedit, located this entry:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CURRENTCONTROLSET\CONTROL\CLASS\{4D36E967-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

2) edit your UpperFilters key. For FSX and their validatin system, they
expect it only reads "PartMgr". In your case, there is great chance it shows
something more. In my case, it was reading:

GoBack2
PartMgr
SiRemFil

3) change the registry to read only "PartMgr"

4) start FSX, you should now be prompted with the activation dialog, proceed
and let FSX start, then exit FSX.

5) edit back the registry key with your previous content

6) exit regedit, and start FSX again, it should all be fine by now!

This worked for me the first time I tried it and thought it might help some
other poor soul struggling with this.

I have installed "Acceleration" OK, I think, until I fly any of my aircraft.
Up to a couple of thousand feet I have bushes and trees whizzing past, and
huge distorted trees zipping up from the ground. Any ideas?

The first time I saw this I thought it was a video driver issue. In two
other
cases it happened just after landing from low fast flights, in the F-18 at
SeaTac, and in the Lear at Toronto. In the F-18, I got an out of memory
error immediately after seeing this effect. In the Lear I quickly checked
Task Manager and found that fsx.exe was using just under 2 GB.

I have 4 Gb, but the problem is that 32 bit XP and Vista only allot 2 GB
of virtual address space for applications. The other 2 GB is for the OS
kernel system. Adding the /3GB switch to to boot.ini in XP will give 3 GB
to /3GB aware apps, but could starve the OS, causing system slowdowns,
depending how much of the 4th GB is free after hardware requirements.

Info here:
http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/system/platform/server/PAE/PAEmem.mspx

A method to adjust the space available to the kernel is explained here:

Yea, better install Vista 64bit if you have 4gb of ram. I have 4gb of
ram too and bought it just for Vista 64bit. My XP install runs fine with
4gb installed but as you said games only see 2gb anyway and the OS only
sees 3gb.

Thanks Ian. I have done as you suggested and all of the flights within the
"Accelerator" pack work OK. But I still have the trees distortion on my
normal flights. I have a 256 Video Card - do you think this is sufficient.
It is an ATI Rage X700. I also have 1.5 gig Ram on a Pentium 4, 2533 MHz,
2.53GHz. One confession though. I have been downloading scenery
improvements - could this cause a conflict?

Worked like a champ. I had all sorts of problems activating FSX, got those
worked out, then went through it again with SP1, now this. Too bad MS can't
get the bugs worked out of thier own systems. Great game though.
