FSX Vista Ultimate 64 bit Intel Quad Processor install problem Not logged in -   Reply

Flight Simulator X does not properly install on 64 bt Vista Ultimate and
Intel Core 2 Quad processor. The install appears to work, and the game is
playable. However, the problem becomes apparent when you try to install the
Acceleration Expansion pack. It can't find FSX, and Acceleration won't
install.
Some of the symptons include: The FSX install screen displays
"IDS_WELCOME", "IDS_CONTINSTALL" and "IDS_OPTIONS". The control panel
program add/remove screen shows the FSX icon, but the name displayed is
"PRODUCT_NAME". If you see those, you will have a bad install.
Possible reasons include: the .ini file does not list Vista as a valid OS.
The installer version used is 3 (KB893803) instead of msiexec.exe version
4.0.6000 which ships with Vista. It lists my Intel Quad processor as an
AMD64, because it doesn't know about the newer Intel processors. (From
"reports" in Program files (x86) under Common Files). The only other choice
for this old installer is a server running an Itanium 64.
The Install Shield is old, from 2005. The application error messages in
Vista shows IDriverT failure (part of Install Shield).
The Vista registry key "RADAR" also shows a memory leak.
Apparently, the developers hope FSX will install correctly in XP SP2
compatibility mode. Manually setting compatibility mode for the installer
doesn't help either. (Copy DVDs to the hard drive and set everything to XP
SP2 compatibility mode.)
The same FSX DVDs install just fine on XP SP2, single cpu system.

Flight Simulator X is NOT Vista compatible. At least not for 64 bit Vista
Ultimate on an Intel Core 2 Quad processor. It will run, but it's not
installing correctly.

Anybody else experience this?
Any idea when a fix might be available?

It installed just fine on my quad core running Vista 64 Ultimate.

You do know there are two program file folders on Vista 64?

I have a Q6700 Quad running Vista Ultimate 64 and an Invidia 8800GSX with 4
gigs. I have installed FSX, SP1 and Acceleration along with the PMDG 747 for
FSX and things are working fine. Installation was a snap and all things
appear to be working fine.

Yes, there are two program folders. FSX on my machine defaults to the (x86)
folder. (Where does yours install?) With remote assist active, Microsoft
support tried to install it in the non-x86 program folder. That resulted in
a .dll error that persisted until the registry was manually cleaned of all
flight simulator entries.
Obviously something is different with your install. Perhaps I got an older
copy of the DVDs, and your's has more recent installer utilities...
After 30+ hours of shared sessions, MS Support was not able to get FSX to
install properly. It will run, and is playable, but is not installed
correctly: Acceleration still can not find FSX.
Vista application error messages state FSX installed correctly. Then
another message says IDriverT had a failure. We tried renaming the
Installshield folder to old, and trying again. No difference.
Did you check for any application or system errors in the log?

Re: FSX Vista Ultimate 64 bit Intel Quad Processor install problem [In reply to "Tom Allensworth"] Not logged in -   Reply

Hi Tom,
Thanks for the response. Glad to hear things are working great for you!
I'm running a Q6600 Quad with 4 GB of ram, and an EVGA nVidia 8800 GTX.
Mobo is an MSI P6N Diamond.
SP1 installs fine for me, as well. Acceleration says I have to install FSX
first - it can't find it. I can try installing Acceleration while I am in
the middle of a flight, and Acceleration still says I don't have FSX
installed...
The install problem surfaces very early in the install process - the "IDS"
labels on the initial install screen are a clear indication something isn't
right. At that point, about the only thing processing is the installer.
That should narrow it down, since this happens within about the first minute
of the install process.

The same DVDs installed FSX, SP1 and Acceleration with no problems on a
single cpu XP SP2 system. That install was a snap.

MS Support has uninstalled, cleaned, wiped, and deleted registry entries and
folders, and then tried to reinstall enough times I now have exceeded the
maximum number of activations. Sometimes the Windows Installer Cleaner
Utility finds it and sometimes it doesn't.

I'm wondering if you did anything special with Installshield, or if you
happened to check the error logs in Vista? Did your FSX install in the
"Program Files" folder, or in the "Program Files (x86)" folder? Does your
FSX .ini file list Vista as a valid OS?

Re: FSX Vista Ultimate 64 bit Intel Quad Processor install problem [In reply to FastWilly] Not logged in -   Reply

I haven't had cause to check the logs, but I will out of interest and post
if I find anything.

Just incase it's relevant, until last weekend I was running XP 32 on a
single core chip. I bought a quad core and Vista 64 (Ultimate) and installed
both last weekend.

I updated my BIOS prior to the installation to obtain multiple core support,
as recommended by the MB manufacturer (Asus).

The Vista installation was pain free. I formatted my disks and made a new
array prior to the install to make sure the XP32 was gone.

Stupidly, I didn't read my DVD boxes properly and tried to install
Acceleration first. That attempt failed with an error complaining about
missing C++ modules. I tracked down the C++ modules down on MS's website and
installed them, and tried to re-install Acceleration (I still hadn't read
the box properly!). This time the installation screen loaded and I could see
I was trying to install the expansion patch before the game!

So then I tried to install FSX but it kept failing at the activation stage.
Apparently the new OS and chip fooled FSX into thinking it was a new PC.

The automated telephone activation also failed; but I got through to a real
person in the end who read a new activation code over the phone to me.

Up to now I've only noticed good things about the Vista/quad core combo.

I was getting 8 - 12 FPS over Copenhagen airport with all sliders at halfway
and running 1028 x 768 resolution.

Now I'm getting a solid 20 FPS with all sliders at max and I've bumped up
the screen res a notch.

I know none of the above helps you in your situation, but I hope it shows
that FSX can be made to work.

That worked flawlessly.

Re: FSX Vista Ultimate 64 bit Intel Quad Processor install problem [In reply to "seeker"] Not logged in -   Reply

I appreciate knowing you were able to get it to install! That helps in
trying to understand what is going on... I think now we just have to figure
out what is different when it doesn't work.
Did yours install in the (x86) Program files folder?
And yes, it would be very helpful to check the application logs. Mine says
it installed fine (sometimes), but other close-by entries indicate problems,
such as with IDriverT.
When we tried to install to the Program Files folder (not x86) I would then
get an unhandled exception 0x80040702, DLL GameUX Install Helper. Once
everything was cleaned out, and we let the install default to the Program
Files (x86) folder, that error message didn't come back again.
The problem seems to keep pointing to the initial installer not getting
things set up correctly...
Appreciate any help you can give! Thanks!

The 'Program Files' folder is for 64bit compiled binaries - the 'Program
Files(x86)' folder is for 32bit compiled binaries. You should rely on the
installer to put things right and never manually move things around.

Since it is uncertain how much intervention has been made ( as recommended
by MS Support, or not) I recommend that you re-install the OS completely and
start off with a clean slate.

Also, do yourself a favor and check for a BIOS update - this is essential
for any new machine!

When you re-install FSX make sure you have the drive (partition!)
defragmented before AND after, even though Vista is set to do this
automatically, it may take some time before it decides what have to go
where?

I also recommend to install any of the FS's in a directory/folder that you
create for the purpose, even better, a dedicated partition that you create
for games and stuff. It will be much easier for you to remember what goes
where, and to backup if you need to. Anything that you don't find in that
folder structure will be on the system partition (probably the 'Documents
and Settings' folder?) But no installer should be messing around in there
anyhow.

Here's what I would suggest. Uninstall FSX. Reboot. Copy the two FSX
DVDs to a temporary folder on your hard drive. You might get a dialog
box from Windows explorer when you copy the second DVD, since a few
files are on both DVDs. Remove the DVD. Now run all the msi (Windows
Installer) files by clicking on them, and any other exe file (MS KB
updates, Visual C run times, etc.) in main folder on your hard drive.
The main msi file will not run this way (It says something like "You
need to run setup.exe to run this file.") Now run setup.exe from the
hard drive temporary folder. FSX will now install and activate properly.
Delete the temporary folder. Reboot, check to make sure that FSX is
running okay. Install Acceleration the same way.

Why does this work? There is a bug in the install scripts that cause FSX
not to install properly on SOME x64 systems. It has to do with how the
64 bit version of the Windows Installer installs 32 bit programs.

Re: FSX Vista Ultimate 64 bit Intel Quad Processor install problem [In reply to jabloomf1230] Not logged in -   Reply

Good thoughts JB, but we already tried from the temp folder on the hard drive.
I'm not sure what you mean by, "Now run all the msi (Windows
Installer) files by clicking on them, ..." Which msi files are you
referring to?
As I said in my earlier post, the msi installer that comes with the DVDs is
not a Vista installer. (version used is 3 (KB893803) instead of msiexec.exe
version
4.0.6000 which ships with Vista. If you read KB893803 it becomes clear why
that installer would have a problem installing on a 64 bit Vista OS and Intel
quad cpu. In fact, that installer reports I am running an AMD quad
processor, instead of an Intel Quad. I believe the only other choice that
older installer version has for 64 bit is an Itanium server.
The true Vista 64 bit installer (version 4.0.6000.16386) can be found in
C:\windows\Syswow64\msiexec.exe. The version 4.5 Beta is out. I'm not real
sure why FSX is trying to use version 3...
It wouild be helpful if the .ini file recognized Vista as a valid operating
system, and pointed to installer scripts and msi files for a 64 bit Vista
operating system, even if it was installing a 32 bit system.
I absolutely agree with you when you say, "There is a bug in the install
scripts that cause FSX not to install properly on SOME x64 systems."

Tony,
Thank-you for the advice.
Did the defragging, etc. Already reinstalled the OS once.
I think I am well beyond the point of tyring something just to
see if it might work. I think it's time to try to understand the
root cause of the problem. Such as maybe an installer version
that wasn't designed to work with 64 bit Vista, and which
might work on some systems, and sometimes doesn't work
at all.

Re: FSX Vista Ultimate 64 bit Intel Quad Processor install problem [In reply to FastWilly] Not logged in -   Reply

Here's the list. You MUST run them all, whether Vista x64 appears to
need them or not:

ISScript11.msi
vcredist_x86.exe
WindowsInstaller-KB893803-x86.exe
msxml.msi (or a non-English language-specific upgrade to xml)

Just to be safe, if you don't see the DirectX setup dialog box, before
you run setup.exe, I would also go into the temporary hard drive
folder's DirectX folder and run dxsetup.exe. Of course, this step also
makes no sense, but some people have reported one missing DirectX 9 file
as also occurring under Vista x64 and gumming up the works. Microsoft
Flight Simulator X.msi won't run by double-clicking on it and will only
install by running setup.exe. That should be the last thing that you run.

Now, why would you possibly have to do all this, especially when it
appears that some of the individual files don't seem to be needed on a
PC with Vista x64 that has been been kept current via Windows Update?
The problem is, is that the 64 bit Windows Installer (msiexec.exe in
c:\windows\system32) also needs to run the 32 bit installer (msiexec.exe
in c:\windows\syswow64) to install FSX. So both versions (32 bit and 64
bit are used by the FSX Install package). You can see this, if you run
the Task Manager or a Process Explorer, while the install is going on.
The install script on the DVD doesn't work right under Vista x64, but
only with certain OS configurations. I have no idea why that is so, but
by manually running everything, FSX will install and activate properly.
If you run everything manually and Vista doesn't need it, it won't
install and overwrite anything that you have that is newer.

Good luck. This approach is really the last possible way to install FSX
under Vista x64. If this method fails, there is something inherently
"wrong" with your OS configuration that is preventing the installation
from completing properly. I don't know what that could be, but it is
prolly is due to the MS Windows Installer package (including the
registry entries) that has become corrupted, by a previous install of
some other software or a random disk error.

Good luck. As an aside, it also helps to shut down every non-essential
piece of software and especially your anti-virus program, but you prolly
did that before.

Hi JB,
Thanks for taking the time to explain that.
I'll give it a try tomorrow night and let you know the results.
Thank-you!

There's only more thing that you could try if all that fails to work.
See if you have version 4.5 of the Windows Installer, rather than 4.0
(which comes with the Vista installation DVD). Some people have reported
that the most recent installer also does the trick. Right click both
msiexec.exe files in the two Windows folders (system32 and syswow64)
and see what the versions are under "Properties".

Hi JB,
I tried all of your methods - no luck. (Thanks for your help!)
Additionally, I downloaded and installed version 4.5 of the Windows Installer.
That didn't help either.
Activision (Call of Duty), EA (MOH Airborne), Sony video and sound editing,
Autodesk Maya, and several other software packages all install without any
issues or doing anything special. The only problem has been with FSX.
FSX uses pre-Vista, pre-Intel Quad installer, .ini file and install scripts.
You think that might have something to do with the problem? The .ini file
does not include Vista as one of the acceptable operating systems.
After several weeks of working with MS support, I think we are coming to the
conclusion the issue may have something to do with running in 64 bit mode on
an Intel quad processor. I'll post again if we discover the cause of the
problem...

FAST WILLY!

I am having the same problem you are.

My specs are as follows:

HP DX5750
AMD X2 4000 (2.1ghz)
Windows Vista Utl
3 GB RAM
ATi HD 2600 PRO

I have been playing FSX for quite some time now just fine, yes I still
have the file name problem and yes I'm sure it has something to do
with the "Program Files - (x86) dir" as well. I really hope they come
up with a solution quickly, I want to play the new ACCELERATION patch!

If anyone has any info dont hesitate to send me a link!

mik@mikproductions.com

THANKS IN ADVANCE!

MIKE

Unfortunately, once the Vista Installer gets muddled up, certain
software won't install properly. I had this happen to me after
installing the nVidia system tuning software nTune. It installed fine,
but it didn't have the proper name in the Windows Control Panel
uninstall list (It just said "PROGRAM NAME"). After that, a few other
software packages did the same and/or the installs failed. Then, a few
weeks later, I couldn't create system restore points and use them, which
is also connected to a faulty Windows Installer. At that point, I had
the choice of a repair install for Vista or a fresh install and I did
the latter. That cured everything, at least for now.

The only solution for you, at this point, is a fresh OS install, which I
do not recommend, for obvious reasons. It would be a lot easier to just
get an install disk for 32 bit XP and create a double boot partition
just for FSX.

As to whether an Intel quad core processor running under Vista x64 is
the problem, try checking the message boards of one of the myriad of
Flight Simulator websites (like AVSIM, for example). I'm pretty sure
people with quad core Intel processors are running FSX under Vista x64,
but maybe not. I've never seen that reported as an issue.

I called Microsoft today and they said it was the first time they had
heard about this specific issue. I liked the support guy to this
thread and according to him he attached it to his records as well. He
said my best bet is to sit tight and wait for a patch, okay great so
now I just spent 30 bucks on software I cant use, now anyway.
So I figure thats what I'll do, I re-installed FSX lastnight and still
have the same problem, and that installation is sooo long I'm not
looking to do it again and this moment. The support guy also said that
a bunch of customers have been calling complaining about the lack of
icon on the FSX start menu shortcut, and that a patch would be coming
out for that in the next five days. I hope they fix this soon, I'm
really looking forward to a carrier landing

Smile

Happy Holidays!

Just to confuse matters here, I have just gone to put FSX back on my VIsta
machine after about 6 Months and I am getting exactly the same problem, I am
running the 32bit version as well. This worked fine first time around, I have
FSX since it came out and Vista Ultimate too. I ger a feeling something has
been updated and screwed everything up
