I went to Vista as I had to buy a new system. FSX installed and runs fine on
it. Not exceptional but ok. The experts say XP is faster than Vista. I
cannot say for sure as I did not record any stats. Also Vista has DX10.

Frankly I do not see any benefits to Vista least of all DX10. FSX SP2 came
out with a DX10 preview which to me was nothing spectacular. It actually
broke a few things in FSX. Some will tell you its only a DX10 'preview'
which is quite true, but when I think about the hoopla in the release of FSX
and how great DX10 would be , and all the misleading artists rendition of
DX10, a preview is just not good enough one year down the road. I can only
surmise it was marketing to promote Vista. Since MS will not be releasing
any more updates to FSX I guess that's all for DX10 until the next FS
release. Hopefully they will get that done along with a better FS engine.

Having said all that Vista users have had the best experience on a fresh
clean reformat install if you go the upgrade route.

I read where MS has Windows 7 the next OS slated for release in the first
half of 2009. Personally if you have the time and patience I would wait. It
may also coincide with another FS release if they have one planned. I also
see XP will have another SP out shortly and it is touted as a very good
release

Vista has provided me nothing better than XP in my home office . Some things
in Vista are a bit annoying but that's another story

Just my thoughts

My 3month old PC is a Q6600(not over clocked) 3GB RAM 500GB HD Vista Home
Premium ( has no fax if you need faxing service...a bummer for small
business people like me)

I think it is fair to say that most upgrades from XP to Vista are the ones
causing most problems.
I would not put FSX on a Vista upgraded computer, personally.
Just the thought of and hassle involved with hardware and software
updates/upgrades that come with the whole exercise.

Thanks for the comments, everything is helpful. On the Vista test it does not
give a score any more. It just says that there are "no issues". Richard you
write that I should make sure nothing is running in the background before
doing a clean install. Doesn't a clean install wipe everything or am I
misunderstanding what I assume to be the definition of a clean install?.
Bill, Are they seriously making another SP for XP? I hadnt heard about it
and can't understand why they should do it as it is almost impossible to buy
(in my area) an XP OS now and totaly impossible to buy new with XP. Your
other observation also had me going a bit. After all the hassle with
marketing Vista why on earth would microsoft come with another (windows7)
less than two years after Vista? Can you point me in the direction of any
documentation please?
Thanks for the replies

Next Windows:

http://www.tgdaily.com/content/view/35641/118/

XP SP3.

http://www.pcworld.com/article/id,139911-c,xp/article.html

Any opinion I have on Vista and its release versus Win 7, would be mere
speculation.

Consensus at various forums would seem to indicate FSX performs better under
XP and if SP3 is as good as it is supposed to be then waiting a bit longer
may not be a bad idea. Unless like me, I had to buy a new PC. The other
machine died on me and in the rush I had to take one pretty much off the
shelf with Vista. I truly did not have the time or energy to wipe it clean
and put on XP. I have a small business to run while I play when I can Smile

And may I add, do not forget to backup all your docs etc onto disc - it
would be disastrous to wipe off XP before doing the upgrade.

The below video might help and give you some idea of what is entailed in an
upgrade

MS upgrade info - I had these in Favourites - in case I had a rush of blood
to the head Smile Some I think have been updated - well I hope they have.

Also, it might be a good idea to pop into the appropriate Vista group in the
web interface discussion groups, where you have posted.
Ask about upgrading in there.

Thanks for the input and I am still a little doubtfull about do it or not do
it. There is something in the old saying about that if it works don't fix it
Smile

I will study the contributions from youtube ............ as recommended.

Howard
I do not use a prayer mat as I do not face[from where I am that is]the South
East when I pray Smile
However, you seem like the sort of chap who will do his research before
making any decision.
I see it that you have three choices
1. Upgrade over XP - which has already been suggested as a no-no
2. Upgrade onto a clean bare computer, devoid of all XP, fully backed-up.
I would recommend searching for MVP sites to help you with this - or even
ask in the windows.xp group, which I am sure you can find in that web
interface discussion group you are using at the moment[or switch to
newsgroup - a far better way to communicate when asking for help].
3. Wait for SP1 on Vista so that it can be loaded as part of a new computer
bought for the purpose of FS/gaming - this might cost a bit Frown

I don't think you have said if you have any sort of FS at the moment.
If not then with your current comp, FS 2004, while you can still find it,
may be a good idea and give you the chance to experience FS first whilst you
wait to buy a new comp say near to Xmas 2008.

The wait will also give you the chance of looking for a 'bespoke' builder
rather than off-the-shelf computers - can be a lot cheaper and built for the
task.
Joining a couple of flightsim forums should help with this.
As I believe you are posting from somewhere in CA on the west coast I cant
help with that - I am on the other side of the little pond.
