FSX crashes on splash screen on new hardware

Hi,
Fsx w/SP1 was working fine on my old machine. I upgraded to a new pc.
The specs are:
Intel Quad Core Q6600
4GB Ram
2x300GB SATA
Nvidia 8800
with Windows Xp SP2
Installation went fine, so did the activation. On starting the game
the scenery indexes got built and then, up comes the dialog box
stating:
"Fatal Error"
no error code or anything. One check box showing "Restart flight
simulator".
Again the whole process repeats. Have tried loading with and without
SP1 with the same result. I have also disabled the secondary cores but
of no avail.
All the drivers have been updated and the OS is also patched.
Any help on this would be appreciated.
