Garmin GPS problem ? or just me !

Hi all
I am using FS2004/Boeing 737-400 and am trying to get to grips with Garmin GPS500
Can I create a flight plan from scratch on Garmin - putting my own waypoints in ?
I can only use Garmin at present by importing my flight plan from FS flight planner - this usually gives me a plan that misses many waypoints ?
Also - what does the flight director switch on the panel do ?
