Help installing aircraft please Not logged in -   Reply

Can't seem to get a Dash 8 installed. Tried two from flightsim and neither
seems to be selectable with FS even though I'm sure I followed the sparse
install directions. Anyone have a link to one comes with an installer or
such? For FS2004.

Aircraft installation can seem a little daunting at first but the
normal practice is to save all the files and folders into a temporary
folder after you extract the downloaded file. You can then move the
folders into FS into their correct position. The aircrafts folder
must go into FS9/Aircraft and not have any subfolders within it apart
from the main textures, panels etc and especially aircraft.cfg file
that came with it i.e. having a folder structure like FS9/Aircraft/
Dash 8 by Flight1/Dash 8 will not work it would have to be FS9/
Aircraft/Dash 8.
You may also have a inbedded zipfile or another folder which contains
effects or gauges. The contents of these files need moved into FS's
main Gauge or Effects folders. Its easy once you get the hand of it.

Some ones here dont like autoinstallers as you dont know what all is
being installed but with so many addons they can be benefitial and
time saving.

Well, think I followed all the instructions properly that came included.
That included copying the approriate folders it mentioned into existing FS
folders. Have gleamed some insight into basic heirachy structure of folders
as old enough easily remember DOS2 and XT's, even Apple II's and the like.

By what I can "see" and comparing to other aircraft I've downloaded that do
work, it should appear and be selectable; but it's not.

As an aside, for the comparitive newbie, having so many aircraft seem to
depend upon another download etc. to be properly installed is very
frustrating when on dialup so it takes so long.

I'm on 2nd pc right now but I'll follow this up with a suitable dir
listing(s) as likely it's something stupid I'm ignorant of Smile

Hmm, are you sure you have downloaded an original model and not just a paint
kit? I noticed in a reply from you you're using a dialup connection, so
maybe you've opted for the smaller download. An original flyable model for
fs9 these days will be at least approx 15Mb, but more likely 25Mb or more if
all things, like original sound and panels for instance, are included.

Hope this helps...-))

Greetings from wind swept Amsterdam,

Jan

Have you checked that the folder structure is correct, as Ibby pointed
out to you in an earlier post? Sometimes with WinZip, extracting with
folders can produce too many and these get in the way, preventing FS9
(FS2004) "seeing" the aircraft. Make sure that you only have a folder
path which is Flight Simulator 9\Aircraft\Dash 8-Q400 which should
contain folders for Model, Panel, Sound, Texture(s) (depending on how
many liveries, each one having a different extension) as referenced in
the aircraft.cfg file which should also be in the Dash 8 folder along
with the .air file.

Are you looking on the list for the right thing? It might not show up as
a Dash 8, it depends what has been entered on the cfg file against "ui
manufacturer". It might be under Bombardier, the RL manufacturer or it
might be entered as the software supplier - annoying I know but it
happens regularly. It might be listed as Canadair (taken over by
Bombardier).

Incidentally, in FS9 it is possible to have the gauges folder *contents*
placed in the panel folder and many people prefer to do this as it means
that if they uninstall the aircraft, getting rid of unwanted gauges is
easier.

If the aircraft is definitely not showing at all then the most likely
cause is that the folder structure is incorrect. If *could* also be an
error in the cfg file but if you haven't messed with it that is unlikely.

Let us know if none of the above has worked.

Iain
