Help on Overclocking utilities Not logged in -   Reply

Hi all.
This is my first adventure into the world of the overclockers, I hope I
don't regret it, still nothing ventured nothing gained.
My question is, what are the best utilities to use. After reading everything
I have found here on the subject, it appears that these are popular.

CPU CoreTemp Ver 0.95
MemTest86+ V1.65
Stress Prime 2004 [orthos_exe_20060420.cab]
Nvidia Ntune Ver 5.05.38.00

Not everyone seems to go for Ntune, does it work or is it better to change
settings in the Bios?.
For a start I would just like to tweak up the CPU. My Video Card was factory
O'clocked so I will leave that alone. From what I have read on this group
playing with this memory can be dangerous unless you really know what you
are doing, so I will forget that for a while.
Thanks for any advice on the utilities.

EVGA nForce 680i SLI - A1 Mainboard - P31 Bios.
EVGA 8800GTS 640MB Video. 163.75 Drivers.
CPU E6850 3GHz. Zalman Fan.
OCZ PC2-8500 DDR2 1GBX2.
XP Pro + SP2.
FS2004
FSX + SP1

Lyn.

Looks like your doing your homework, that is good.
I would highly recommend staying away from Ntune, I will not even install
it. I have read of too many problems reported by using it.
Change your settings in the bios.
Start moving your fsb up, a little at a time, testing your system as you go
for stability. I use Orthos, and 3d Mark 05.
Another good source for info, are the EVGA forums for their 680i mb. There
are some really good tips in there as well.

Good luck,

I have been watching our federal election telecast all evening. Our prime
minister John Howard just got the boot, we call him Bonsai (a little Bush).

WHAT! John Howard got the boot!

Does that mean Crash Lander is now leader of Aus as well? Smile

The difference between flight attendants and jet engines, is that the
engine usually quits whining when it gets to the gate!

Interesting. From the outside (USA) he seems like a ballsy little guy who
has Australia's best at heart. However, I have a few friends who live there
who have a different opinion.

I would also stay as far away from Ntune as possible. Use BIOS only. I have
an evga 6801 mobo with a q6600 o/c to 3.6. It takes patience and a lot of
reading. The evga forum(s) ared a great source of info. Also try
www.overclock.net.

Another great free utility for stress testing is OCCT.EXE.

Good luck,

The free version is good enough.

I have been toying around with my EVGA 680i, mainly due to the memory
controller issue ( getting stuck on C1 error code during post).
One consensus seems to be, the thermal compound on the heatsinks on the
mosfets, and on the northbridge and southbridge chips, was poorly done,
resulting in them getting too hot causing these errors.
I removed mine, and yes it was pretty poory done, cleaned them off, and
replaced it with Arctic Silver Ceramique . Whilst I was at it, I replaced my
Zalman pasted on my cpu, with Arctic Silver 5.

Not sure it is going to resolve it though, once I got everything back
together and booted up again it hung up on C1, after powering off and on
about 4 times it succussfully booted. We'll see. One nice benefit is my cpu
certainly runs cooler now, by about 3-4c. Arctic Silver is some pretty good
stuff.

Don.
Up to now I have never had a C1 or any other error code.
I read about the poor heatsink compound but decided to leave it and see what
happens.
However I did buy some Arctic Silver and use it under the Zalman. I will
stick it under the other chips if I have any trouble.

BTW, I installed nHancer on my FSX caddie and spent some time reading the
help and finding out how it works. It looks really good now, hardly any
shimmering, perfect Anti-Aliasing, I think it even reduced the small amount
of stuttering that I had. I have a Samsung 226BW set to 1680x1050 res.

Should you do the mosfets at some point in future, use Arctic Silver
ceramique, rather than AS5. It is non-conductive, and as you'll see with the
mosfets, it would be easy
to get the AS5 somewhere not desirable.

I may have to check out nhancer, I have heard of it before but never really
tried it.

Nice monitor, I have the same one except mine is the CW, I really like it.

I hope you never experience the C1 error, it is a pain.

Lyn,

Also, here are some good articles on overclocking on our boards, with the
core2 duo chips, in case you haven't read.

Re: Help on Overclocking utilities [In reply to "Don Burnette"] Not logged in -   Reply

I have just read the how to do it post on the EVGA 680i forum, I will have
to get some Ceramique.

Try nHancer, you won't be sorry, it unlocks many more adjustable parameters
not available in the standard Nvidia Control Panel. But, be careful, you
must read the manual coz some settings interact with each other and if you
get it wrong it can look dreadful. You also have to get it right in the FSX
option settings.
There is another utility that is pretty good but I will stick with nHancer.

Yes it is a nice monitor but I am stuck with a non Samsung panel and the
backlight leakage stinks. I returned the monitor but the replacement is no
better.

Lyn.

Maybe this site can help:
<http://www.jonnyguru.net/forums/showthread.php?t=2437>

CPU-Z
Super-Pi
Orthos
and a CPU temperature monitoring tool of your choice like tat.exe,
