Using FRAPS or CAMSTASIA, which one is better? I don't know. I plan to use a Digital Video Recorder to capture Flight Simulator videos in the future.. I'm just waiting for santa.

Hi,
I use Fraps--it works fairly well, but the quality is not the best, unfortunately. Perhaps I'm doing something wrong. The files are huge, too, in the hundreds of megabytes, and even gigabytes, but VirtualDub takes care of that. If anyone knows how to optimize Fraps and/or VirtualDub to get better video, or can point me to a site, I'd be very grateful!
Cheers,
Robyn

Hi - FRAPS does work well if used right...here are some pointers:

1. If you don't have one already, get a second hard drive (not to be used in a striped set) purely for storage purposes. Then, partition the drive into two logical partitions. 1st partition should be at the front and maximum of 10-15GB, 2nd for the rest of the drive. I recommend a 7200rpm, 8mb cache SATA or better but I would imagine even a 7200rpm IDE drive will help.

2. Create a swap file (referred to as virtual memory) in the 1st partition of the new drive and set the initial AND maximum size to a value exactly double of your RAM. i.e. if you have 2GB (2048 MB) of memory, then set initial and max size to 4096. DO NOT PUT ANYTHING ELSE ON THIS PARTITION.

3. Delete your old Swap file by clearing the values - this is most likely located on your system drive where Windows is installed.

4. You must now reboot.

5. Open Fraps and set the recording directory to a directory located on the 2nd partition of the new drive.

6. Select 60fps and do not record audio

7. Select 'no sync'

Results?

You should see a 100-200% increase in video performance with almost no stutters. If you wish to capture sound, it is recommended that you capture this seperately using an audio capture tool (lots available on the web) and sync the audio when you create your movie using movie maker or some other package.

Best wishes,

Devon.

Very good directions, Rabbit. I haven't seen anyone provide step-by-step instructions on how to capture a better quality video via Fraps. I, too, have had troubles getting better quality out of Fraps. I thought that after I capture a video and then encode it through Canopus, I would have a GREAT video. Doesn't happen. Although Canopus reduces the huge Fraps files, the quality is compromised. I am quite illiterate in the video and encoding side, but I'm still learning. Of course I don't have a second hard drive, but I do plan on upgrading my computer this summer to a dual core CPU,etc. My current system is pretty darn good, but the dual core seems more appealing. At any rate, thanks for the good info. Any tips a pro can provide to us newbies is greatly appreciated!
