Not sure if it's been linked already (if so, apologies), but here's a nice
IR to visual comparison (split screen) of a night landing at Aspen.

Wow what a difference. Seems like something good to implement on all
commercial aircraft and those who could afford it privately..

Cheers,
Chris

IR and nightwission goggles, are allways nice to have, when the darknes gets
too black, but I'm not sure if it will improve the maneuvering of comercial
flights.

Yes it enables the pilot to see what's besides the runway, but does (s)he
need to? Isn't it just added info, that needs to be handled?

During a landing, the pilots are allready buissy operating instruments,
plane, and ATC announcements, and they can allready see the lights marking
the runway, and other need to see objects, plus in most major airfields,
they get instrument readings telling them what's ahead.

Operating from a non IFR equipped airfield, with no lights, etc. it will
deffenately be nice to see what the darkness hides, but should you realy be
flying non visual in such airfields, unless you fly Airforce/Army opps.?

I have a sneaky suspicion that this is trialling IR imaging on MFD's or even
HUD-type displays rather than NVG's. I may be wrong (it wouldn't be a first
if I was!!) but I suspect that these things have more to do with improving
safety and extending operability than they have to do with manoeuverability.

Err ... and when it's daylight...?

And ... err ... when it's daylight ...?
The IR video would seem to have other information superimposed on it. I can
make out a horizon, speed bar, compass and even a velocity vector. There's
other stuff there too but I can't make it out due to the low quality of the
video. At the stage we see here one would hope that any instruments needing
operating would have long since been operated, set and tweaked. There's not
much left to do but sit back and steer the thing onto the ground, rather
like the guys in the video did.

The airfield here is KASE - lots of lights and stuff. Have a look at the
charts for Aspen and you'll see how this could indeed be a very useful
addition. It's not an isolated case either. There are plenty of other
airports where this would be extremely useful - and if my suspicions that
it's a trial are correct, then it's probably coming soon to a glass cockpit
near you!

Anyway, I wasn't intending to debate the pro's and con's. I just thought it
was a neat comparison. Now we need someone to do a split-screen video of
FS.... Wink

Huh, HUD-------Now why didn't I think of that :o/

You land VFR, i guess, aided by a few instruments?

My thoughts went along these lines: Information is nice to have, a lot of
information, is realy nice to have, but at some point, you reaches the
limmit of your brains capassity, and it (the brain) starts to block out some
of the info, to cope, allso known as "Information overload". At that point,
you don't controll what informations, that is getting through, your stressed
brain does, and that's not a good thing.

But if that FLIR is displayed on a HUD, alongside some basic info, about
speed, deccent rate, direction etc. then it might be the future in every
comercial flight, especially if it can be made to mach, what you would see
in bright daylight, on a clear day, since FLIR is not influensed by clouds,
rain, fog, and other "sight bugs".

Yup, it's a nice video, have seen one, where FSX was comparred to a IRL
landing, on a split screen, don't remember the link, but it was posted in
here, arround the time, when FSX was launched.
