Been there before.

I was VFR in a Lear 45 on base to Bromma (ESSB). A Cessna 182 was out and
about. When I turned to final the Cessna was cleared to land and I was to
follow. Trouble was the Cessna was 3 miles to my starboard. I made a slow
circle and came in behind him. But I couldn't get slowed enough and had a go
a round. It really pissed me off when the Cessna was doing a touch and go.

Na... you got it made.

Sec. 91.113
(g) When two or more aircraft are approaching an airport for the purpose
of landing, the aircraft at the lower altitude has the right-of-way

I get what Dallas said, but I'd be courteous since I was #2 and break off
my approach by slowly banking right and climbing out.

The few times that I've been in this situation in the sim, I've had the
other plane land right on top of me. And when you've got crash detection
turned off, it's not a pretty sight!

OTOH...the plane behind you is at a higher, safer altitude and in a better
position to climb out for a go-around. Yet the AI planes don't seem to do
this very often. (not around me anyway)

So I guess, in the sim, the choice is yours.

Watching the AI in FS9 it is that way, but in FSX it seems the lower plane
goes around. More than once I've seen a jet overtake a slower GA plane
on close final, descend to about 100' AGL, then climb out to allow the
C172, or whatever to enjoy its unencumbered landing.

You're too nice. Smile

In reality, it sounds like this is a towered airport and two things could
have happened. 1) The tower screwed up 2) The pilot screwed up

If it's number 1, then the tower would most likely make #1 go around and
hope one of you two didn't file a report on the controller.

If it's number 2, then they might make you go around, but for sure they'd
tell you to give them a call after you landed.

If it's number 3, Flight Sim ATC, then you can land and the sim will crash
to the desktop and let you file an on-line report to Microsoft.

Could that be because the CRJ's pilot is wearing a Viking helmet?

Go tell it to the ATC in FSX. LOL

There's a free utility for FS9 (don't know if it works in FSX) available
from Avsim, called AISmooth which is designed to eliminate many of these
problems. I use it and it does seem to work most of the time. I've even seen
AI traffic ahead of me being given the go around so I could land when
normally that would have meant me going around. Smile

The scariest moment I had was when I was on short final in my trusty DC-3,
at 300' AGL, my eyes fixed on the runway, gear down, flaps and speed set,
and just about ready for touchdown, when out of nowhere an Orbit 737 skins
right over me (its wheels almost touching the top of my fuselage) and it
lands. Depsite the fact that it overshot half the runway, it landed!!

I applied full power, set the flaps back up, retracted the gear and did a
go around. As I did so, I watched the 737 doing some offroad action,
plowing through the grass on its way back to the airport.

So there is an actual programming difference between FS9 and FSX?
That's good to know.
