On my Windows 98 computer I can select different gaming devices, On my newer
Dell XP I cannot. When I select a different device, it says "The driver is
not loaded prperly, you must use the Device Manager." I can see twenty or so
devices and I can even create new devices, but I cannot load them.

It's going to be difficult for anyone to help much if you don't provide
more information about which game controller you actually have and how
it connects to the computer.

Some notes though:

IF the controller requires a game port, the game port MUST be installed
before installing the controller. Utilize the "Add or Remove Hardware"
wizard available through the Windows control panel, for the software
portion of installations.

Some controllers, including some analog ones, require the installation
of software and/or drivers provided by the game controller manufacturer.
Software for older devices might not be available any longer unless you
have the media that came with the device. Search the web to see if the
manufacturer operates a site offering support downloads.

Some adapters for using game port controllers on USB ports are only
designed to work with analog controllers. The game port was designed
with the intention of supporting two SIMPLE joysticks (no twist or
throttle capabilities) with only two buttons on each joystick. A game
port Y cable adapted the second stick to the second set of connections
on the game port. There was a separate type of DIGITAL game controller
that utilize the game port's Musical Instrument Digital Interface (MIDI
- designed to communicate with electronic keyboards). A few digital game
controllers came with adapters that permitted either USB or game port
MIDI use. Force Feedback controllers that attach to the game port are
probably digital.

Support for USB devices may vary in Windows 98, especially if the
original non SE version of Windows 98.

Thanks for the quick response....here's some more info.
The program is FMS Flight Simulator. I want to mention my older computer
has a game card in it and the flight simulator plugs into the game card via
game port. I purchased a game port to USB adapter for my newer computer but
since I cannot select any of the other devices, I didn't think it was a
hardware problem. Here is the exact error, "Your Game Port or Game Port
Drivers are not properly configured. Pls consult your Device Manager." If
I go to System/Game Controller, it shows "USB Controller OK" but I can't
change it to one of the twenty other devices available. When I look in the
Device Manager, I don't even see "USB Controller", just Human Interface
Device - USB Human Interface Device. I would have thought there would have
been a "Game Controller" under the "System Devices" but there isn't any. I'm
still puzzled.
