Any suggestions?

Friend wants to build a system. So far we have nVida for the graphic...
probably the new 8800 GT 512MB. Now we need everything else.... MB,
Processor, etc.

I doubt he will do SLI but he does want a fast system.

If he can afford it, bo with the 8800 Ultra w/ 728mb.

No sense in SLI if he's flying FS9>>Not recognized or made use of.

Quad core CPU if he's got the bucks and don't forget a minimum 650
watt power supply for the 8800 series.

If I were building a rig today, I would probably go with:

Intel Quad Core Processor ( fastest processor that fits in the budget)
Nvidia 8800 GT 512MB
Probably Intel X38 chipset mb ( I just got one of these to install later )
DDR2 PC8500 ram ( at least 2gb)
Good quality at least 750w power supply
Good aftermarket heatsink/fan , like Zalman, if any overclocking intentions.

Note: The X38 chipset boards, at this time, only support Crossfire ( ATI's
dual gpu platform, not SLI), but I don't think the benefit is worth the
expense myself, for either platforms, based on what I have read.

If you would like a good practical guide on hardware and setting up FSX you
can have a look at "Koorby's tuning guide for FSX" You will find it on the
VOZ forums. I cannot post the link here because you have to register to read
the posts. Go to http://vistaoz.org/ and register, then go to the "FSX
Support" forum and it is the first topic. It is well worth the effort as it
could save you a few bucks. Here is a quote from his guide:

" Oh, and quad core? Don't bother - we got more performance out of an
overclocked E6600 Conroe than the latest QX6800 quaddie. Waste of money; and
whilst FSX is multi-core aware, the new quad core CPUs run FSX slower than
the E6xxx series. Perhaps this will be another "wait until FSX SP2" thing to
revisit."

I hope this helps,

Lyn.

If going the route for fast with the other stuff why settle for less
in the graphics card. The GT is currently the most for the money but
certainly not the fastest. Both the GTX and Ultra are faster although
200 to 300 USD more. but if going with the GT there is one out there
running the GPU at 700 MHz and 2 Gig for the memory speed at roughly
$300 USD. I think I'm going to add that to the one in the shop.

I like the Zalman just on general principles.

I guess there is memory bandwidth too for the card to look at. My
8800GTX Ultra XXX runs at 685 core, 2300 memory and gpuz is showing a
bandwidth of 110gb/s. The card however is expensive and very hard to
get hold off, especially in UK. There are a few reported problems,
one of which I have were I have to downclock the core speed to 665
with Rivatuner otherwise the system locks up on high resolutions.

go with EVGA products. 320mb video - 588mhz 8800gts, 680i sli motheboard,
4gb ram. ddr2 800 is fine, actually, difference with higher clocked ram is
not that substantial. q6600 quad core cpu of course. and then install x64bit
OS.

Here's a page of them from 600 to 700 MHz.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=40000048&Description=GeForce+8800GT&name=Video+Cards

Watch out for line wrap.

The $300 is now $330 and the last one of the group.

Thanks for that, mate.

I lost patience trying to get hold of one of the new GeForce 8800 GT

John

In my constant battle for max performance and constant tweaking with
the BIOS I have just managed to get my clock speeds on gpu above
stock. I raised my PCI-E Bus frequency a little from its default
100mhz to 115mhz and it has allowed me to reach 690 and 2300mhz on
card. Together with my overclocked cpu and 667mhz ram running at
1066mhz I'm getting 20998 now on 3DMark05 and 13730 on 3DMark06 which
pleases me very much. One tell tale test I run is the opening
sequence of STALKER which ALWAYS crashed on stock card speeds but is
fine now.

As for your card I wouldnt adjust anything unless you have problems.
Mine is the XFX brand which is severely overclocked from the standard
GTX and the only reason I started using Rivatuner was after reading
about other ppl having initial problems with its default speeds. If
you need Rivatuner make sure you get the latest version 2.06 which
supports the latest 169.04 beta drivers from Nvidia.

Good luck with it.

Just adjusted my cpu multiplier to 8x and raised FSB to 444 to give
same overall speed of 3550 and 3Dmark05 score just jumped up to
22432 Wink))
Seems the extra bandwidth of the FSB has had a great effect.

John

I think my greed for an even faster pc has actually cost me in
performance. The system became a little unstable. I downloaded and
installed the latest BIOS for my motherboard from Abits website to
hopefully get more out of it but on setting it up with the same
voltages and cpu speed even with default ram speed it refuses to
boot. I have to drop the cpu speed a way down to near stock levels
which disgusts me. When I built this system I spent a lot on a top
quality board £180 and an Antec case with huge fans to aid cooling £80
and all for what to get a few extra mhz after a crap BIOS update. I
reinstalled the previous bios but still have the same problems with
overclocking.

In my frustration earlier this evening I upped all the voltages 1
level about what I was comfortable with but it still wouldnt boot. My
board allows me to save 5 different BIOS profiles which can be
reloaded. The 'safe' one was loaded with default cpu and ram speeds
and timings and I then got loads of hardware failures just as windows
opens the desktop. No explanation of the proplem, no stop screen with
a problem code. Talk about panicing - felt physically sick. System
now costs around £2500 with additional ram and hard drives that I have
installed since I built it in August and I thought I had totally
fucked it up with my bloody greed on speed. Fortunately whilst it had
booted before this the profile saved had the memory command rate set
to 1T which can be demanding on systems especially with the tight
latencies my ram has. This was causing the crashes tonight.

Glad to at least have it working, it is running entirely at stock
speeds with Prime95 doing stress tests to make sure all seems well.
I have complained to Abit about the BIOS update but they will probably
just say overclocking is at your own risk even if they allow it in the
BIOS, encourage overclocking by huge statements about the products
protential and even provide a program with the board for overclocking.

Sometimes we can become complacent about the risks until its too
late. I now know to fair on the cautious side.

Thats it for my 'exciting' evening, how are you John?

Ibby

Hi Ibby,

Well, despite what I was PROMISED, after I phoned, ~ a week ago, and
despite the fact that I've already paid for my Ultra video card and the
courier to my front door, I still haven't got the card.

Its the last bit I'm waiting before I can start building, and then
testing, enjoying...

The card was clearly listed as "In Stock" when I paid for it - the
bastards!!

I'm getting totally fed up with the way people, all over the world, seem
to conduct themselves these days, apparently!!

Regarding the new PC, which I've treated myself to, after a helluva long
time with the current one (which I'm just giving to my best mate, no
charge), I'm lucky enough to know a few experts, as well as have my own
knowledge - Katy Pluta was a fantastic help in selecting a few of my
components, particularly the graphics card and CPU.

If I could only just get the bastard built, and up and running, so that
I could enjoy it all.

I've stuck with my preference of removable drive caddies, so I'm going
to have all the options of Win Xp Pro, and Vista Ultimate, 64-bit, and FS9,
and FSX, mate...... Yeehhaawww!!! Smile))

I'm feeling pretty let down by some of these blokes, particularly since
I've already paid my money, and they're now earning interest on my money,
and despite their promises I still haven't got my goods!!!

I also have an issue going on with an ex family member (one of my two
brothers), regarding a lot of money, in my terms, which is not resolved yet,
and which I'll win, hands down, which I'm ABSOLUTELY SAVAGE about - I now
have one less brother, thank Christ, and also thank Christ, when it comes to
my Will.

So there you go, mate, that's exactly how I feel at the moment. Smile)

I probably should just shut up, and say nothing, for a while, and thats
exactly what I'm going to do, mate.

Hi John,

I hope you get your card soon as its hell waiting for that new toy to
arrive and it doesnt.

I currently have a similar problem with a new leather suite I
ordered. It was ordered through a large UK catalogue store and should
have been with me 35 days after ordering. It was ordered on 13th
August and I still dont have it all. Have a single seat and awaiting
2 x sofas from them. Complained a lot on the phone, emailed a
complaint and wrote a formal complaint to their Head Office as I have
been promised it a few times but due to 'demand' stock availability is
pretty much non existant from their supplier.

They are sitting on £1500 of my money and just supplied part of the
order. They rang the other day offering me gift vouchers for £150 if
I wait till the next due date or they could refund the entire suite
including the seat I have. I least get some comfort that they are
taking notice of my complaints now and they are a very large company
not some small time retailer who could screw you a lot easier.

All the best

Ibby

Hi Ibby,

Fingers crossed for the rest of your lounge suite, mate - things like
that sure add a new level to the definition of frustration, particularly
when they've got your money, and are earning the interest on it!! Smile)
