Try going into Settings -> Sound and take a look at what is indicated.
Click on the 'Configure' button and see if any of his settings there
differ from yours. The drop-down listbox for all the sound devices
(under Input devices) should list the microphone. Even if everything is
the same, just the act of checking things out will cause FSX to tell you
to restart FSX for the changes to take effect - even if you didn't
change a thing. Perhaps this will "jog" FSX into working.
