Depending on what size you used to have, do note that a 24 inch widescreen
renders a slightly smaller picture with more elbow-room, than what a 19 inch
VGA mode would!

Seeing the number of 22 and 24 inch monitors they are selling at the moment
( at reasonable prices!) I am wondering if this is what people really want,
after the initial wow-potential have peeked?

Personally, I am saving up for an HP 3065 - yes, that's a 30 inch and I know
I will love it!

It certainly will be a space-filler. Maybe even a space-killer? I have been
pining for a 21 inch VGA for the last ten years now. Never could afford one.
Each time I'd saved up for one, it was time for a new machine - with the
Widescreens now taking over the market, I just decided that if it's bigger,
I really want it to have a bigger picture too! I'm not usually blinded by
figures as advertised.

I was no genius doing Geometry in school, but as far as it has carried me, I
figure a 30 inch should have a somewhat larger image than the 21 inches that
I dreamed about so long ago, a 26 inch is still not quite as big and there
is nothing in between. The few 26 inches units that I've seen is from three
to four times the price of a 22 inch and the HP is only roughly five times
that price! So, if I want a bigger image I have to accept that it is going
to cost me, but this is a lot more value as I see it. The point being, that
it should serve me well for many years and outlive several machine upgrades

The other option that I seriously thought about is a projector - the
questions that remain is ones of resolution counter display quality at a
reasonable image size, this seem to have the HP in favour with better
resolution. The calculation otherwise renders just about the same price
range for the two, with the added expense and limited life expectancy of the
projector lamp.

The decision was made when I couldn't find a dealer who would fix a
comparative setup that I could make an intelligent choice, seeing them
together before handing over the money. The HP had smashing reviews, so I'll
go for that.

Have you thought of using 3 monitors and the Matrox. I seen the
setup using 19 inch LCD and it is quite nice

I had thought of a project but you need a bigger space and the
resloution is needed (Only obtained in the higher priced ones)

If I had the room the Matrox and the 3 monitors would be my choice

Well - yes, and no! I am not flying and gambling all that much any more and
I really think it would be over-kill for me. If I wanted to do something
outrageous, I would build a room exclusive for FS and have a large screen
projector; a subwoofer in the cellar; a virtual seat and a setup that would
allow for almost complete 'immersion'. But I would need a sponsor to do
that. That's not to mention, a more mature FS!!!

Anybody?

That sounds like a job for (DAH dah DAHHHHHH) SUPER FSX. Better known
to mortals as FSXX. Secretly toiling in their caves the tireless
Microsoft drones are laboring to bring us yet another "As Good As It Can
Be" simulator. This new paradigm in flight simulations requires the use
of quantum computers with terabyte hard drives, DX23, 2GB video cards,
and 14.8 surround smell-o-vision video displays. All cunningly
described on the box as "2.0 Ghz processors, 512Mb RAM, and video cards
with 128Mb of RAM". Little do us mortals know.

Ha, ha - well again, yes and no - I still remember this Sciratti dude (he's
the other half of the FSUIPC developers) way back in the days of FS98 when
he had a multi-display cockpit tied up on a network that looked absolutely
awesome - then, and even now, I'm sure! Today they run a business together
employing a diverse Virtuallity Immersion scheme with a variety of self
invented aids to do some real flying in your own armchair. It's not cheap,
but it certainly looks good. If you can section out a room (and not miss it)
and have a handfull of 10.000 dollars (and not miss that) I'll guarrantee,
you'll be flying!

I figure, a lot less would do it. A really large screen ( a run-of-the-mill
projector having 1280 x 720 res. could easily display a 2m wide image) and a
convincing soundsystem (the subwoofer would serve the stereo too, of course)
and a tactile seat (they do exist) and a few instruments in a home-made
panel, you might concievably be able to pay for such a thing.

FSXl, I expect to be an enormously advanced development to FSX and should
definitely do it - hell, FS9 will do allright lacking all the new stuff of
course.

I also remember a Flying Club in Bristol (UK) that had a website (I cannot
find them any longer) where they sported their Flight School. It was much as
I described above - looked totally awesome, but their link stopped working
(sometime around 9-11???) and there have been no references to it since.

I've allways protested about the idea that the computer is an advanced
calculator - internally, it is a bit-pattern manipulator - externally (to
the user) it is a creativity generator.

Having used it for some time now, it's up to us to define what we can
otherwise do with it - the sky's the limit, eh PB?
