Agreed... my wife uses Budweiser to kill garden slugs. She says they have
a definite preference for it.

In the US now we have three equal sections to the beer store coolers:
1) the usual crap - Bud, Coor, Miller
2) Imported Beers - German, Mexican etc
3) US Microbreweries & Craft Breweries - every bit as good as Euro imports.

Well, my initial reaction was in fact mayonaise, but then I thought it
might have been cockney slang or something.

Hi Quilly,

Sometimes, down here, mate, they mix a little "Sauerkraut" in with the
mayonnaise, so it doesn't have that sickly, sugary, creamy taste of
"straight" mayonnaise, even if its made on the premises (which invariably
tastes a whole lot better), and even if it doesn't "intrude", and blanket
the flavours, quite so much...

Sometimes, some of the better Chefs get even a little more inventive
than that, with a few extra herbs and spices, appropriately mixed in, not
beaten and whizzed to death...

I think that may have been what Crash Lander was referring to.

Yes, in fact I am serious. If you ask Americans what a meat pie is, 95% of
them would give you a blank stare.

My guess would be either something like a chicken pot pie or something like
the Latin cultures eat, which is deep fried spiced meat in a pocket of
dough? aka an Empanada.

Re: OT --- A senior citizen test [In reply to Dallas] Not logged in -   Reply

Hi Varmit,

Nah, mate - in Aus', in the better quality meat pies, its large chunks
of premium quality beef, along with gravy, and various spices, and other
stuff, all enclosed in a flat, round, tub shaped pastry ~ an inch high, with
a pastry lid on it all, too.

We put "dead horse", aka tomato sauce, aka Ketchup, on top,
sometimes......

In Adelaide, they have a variation they call the "Pie Floater" - still
the same pastry shell, but this time with a "warmed, crushed, green pea
topping", and usually with the same "dead horse" on top... its healthier,
kind of... Smile))

The "Rat coffins", etc, etc, that Crash Lander was referring to are the
cheaper quality pies, which have cheaper "mince beef" fillings, rather than
prime quality beef chunks......

Everything else is the same, mate... Smile))

Pretty hard to beat a pie floater, after you take the trouble to pull
over in your Maseratti, just to get two of them, since the blokes selling
them usually have so much social nous, mate!!

I almost invariably end up with the cheaper ones, unless I'm out of
town, in somewhere like Kilmore, where they have some shops that have been
going for yonks, and which are famous for their quality - same goes for
various other locations, where its almost considered sacrilege if you don't
pull over for a few "dog's eyes" (i.e. pies)... Smile))

salad cream? never heard of it.
We use mayonaise on our salads commonly referred to as salad dressing.

Thanks for that... why did you think Americans consume meat pies too?

From Wikipedia:
"However, most pie manufacturers specify 'beef' in their ingredients list;
typically, those using other types of meat will simply put 'meat' in the
list instead. FSANZ's definition of meat includes snouts, ears, tongue
roots, tendons and blood vessels."

Yum! Snouts!

When I, and colleagues worked in the USA we would often fly in 100 or 200
Aussie meat pies to calm our homesickness.

It is the British version of mayonnaise.

"In the United States, where salad cream is generally unavailable
(and unknown), the T. Marzetti Company produces a similar product,
called T. Marzetti Original Recipe Slaw Dressing." --Wikipedia
