OT Can't defrag. Not logged in -   Reply

I have been given an OLD laptop. By old, I mean, this thing has labels on it
saying it is designed to run with Windows 98, so I'm suggesting it's about
10 years old.
It has a 4 Gig hdd, and when I got it, it was very slow, and full of so much
crap it's just ridiculous.
I have deleted over 1000 emails that were filling it up, and deleted
everything I can see that is not necessary, I've run disk clean up, and now
the hdd is about half full. There's still probably more stuff that can come
off, but I'll deal with that later.
Now, according to the system, it's not been defragged for almost 900 days,
so I want to defrag it. I ran a thorough scan disk scan, and it found no
errors. Next I ran defrag, and just as it's about ready to start moving
files around, it gives an error saying it could not continue the defrag
because it has found a problem, and I need to run scandisk. So, I run scan
disk again, and again it finds no errors, and so I try defrag again. Still
won't do it.
I restart the computer in dos mode, and try to defrag from dos, but it just
tells me defrag requires windows to run.
Can anyone suggest a course of action to sort this out?
The laptop will only be used for one of either 2 things. Haven't decided
which yet. Either some simple games for my 4 year old, or I may keep it for
flight planning for myself.
Another possible solution I'm thinking might be to just format the hdd, and
install Windows Me on it. I have Me on disc from an older computer. Would
that solve the problem?
Any advise appreciated.

If you can get a version of Norton Utilities 1.0 for Windows then you
can use Speed Disk to do the job. However, that being the case, try
booting to a clean DOS prompt by hitting F8 during the boot process
before it shows the Windows screen. Then run Scandisk and see if that
fixes stuff. Once that's done, manually clean out the temp folder
(can't remember off hand where Win98 put it) and then boot to Windows
and try again.

Do you have the original files to restore the motherboard drivers, etc.? Is
it even compatible with ME?

I picked up a used Fujitsu laptop, P-150, back around '98, but no factory
discs, which had win-95 messed up royally. Even a bad physical portion on
the HD that scandisc would just hang up on about 75% through it. I went
into the bios and told it it only had 12 rather than 16 heads so it didn't
try to access that part of the drive (knocked it down to a 1.6gb from a 2gb)
and that fixed that part. Then I was able to format the drive, and tried to
load win98 but it never would get through it. Finally I tried loading dos
and win-3.11 - it worked. Then I upgraded to 98. It wouldn't take an
upgrade to win98SE either, so it's still on my workbench with 98, and just
used to access the web when needed...

Probably not much, but when I buy an old car, the first thing I do is clean
it up and change the oil. Same thing here.

No, I ran the full scan that checks for bad sectors.

Hi CL,

Try starting the tghing up in Safe Mode by tapping on ther F8 key while
Windows starts.

When in Safe Mode, all of the resident drivers and utilities are omitted
from start up so the Defrag program gets a chane to work on a clean system.
It was a common problem onWindows 98 that any background programs, including
the screen saver, caused the defrag to stop and re-start. After ten times it
would just pack up and forget it.

Regards,

Keith A

Hi Keith. Yes, the 10 times restart got me on the scandisk, until I
remembered to disable the screen saver.
The defrag is simply not starting once it does the initial check to see
what files will and won't be moved.

Hi CL. AV programmes can cause that as well by scanning files which
interrupts the de-frag in Win 98.

Without regard to fixing your disk, I suggest a plan for your ME disk.
1. Fire a silver bullet through it.
2. Insert a nice wooden stake into the resulting hole.
3 Put everything, including any ME documentation, into a lead box.
4. Add a large clove of garlic and a crucifix to the box.
5. Bury the box.

The older Windos versions had this issue on Defrag, that if it was stopped
for anny reason, it would never start again, until you ran a clean
boot/fresh install.

Only sollutions:

1) Get hold of a Norton Utillities 4.0 or later, but no later than 2002, and
use that to defrag. It's faster and better than the windos one, and it can
help on keeping the registy clean.

2) Format C:, the ultimate sollution to most Windos problems, exept Windoze
itself ;o)

Your idea about using ME, might work, if the CPU is 150MHz+ and there's 64MB
RAM+

ME beats 95, and 98(SE) hands down, on preinstalled drivers, and the use of
USB, plus it installs directly from a bootable CD drive, if the BIOS
supports this.

98SE beats ME on anny other point, especially running old games, that needs
direct access to DOS.

You mean CHKDSK?

Scandisk is the old utility, yes?

Did you run CHKDSK C: /f { for fix }

or CHKDSK C: /r { for repair - longer - checks free space }

I disabled the scan part of the defrag, and it's defragging nicely now.
I cleaned as much crap off it as I can, even removed anythng internet
or email related, as this laptop isn't getting hooked up to the net.
Next I installed Zoo Tycoon, with both the add ons (Marine Mania, and
Dinosaur Digs), and also Theme Park World.
The HDD is now about 70% full, and the games run quite well on it. My
son is happy that his 2 favourite games are now running well on his
very own computer! Wish I had my own computer at the age of 4! lol!
Thanks for the help and advice guys!
BTW, the system says it's an AMD K6 3D processor, with 64Mb ram. Never
heard of it before, but I'm guessing it ain't that flash! lol!

Hmmm, sure it's not K6II?

If not, then it's max.400MHz as I recall it, probably 200MHz is more likely.
At least it supports "3D NOW" technology, so the earlyest 3D games can be
run on it :o)

It's equivalent to the first Intel Pentium processors :o/

64MB RAM...........Holy moly, guess eaven Win98 is making it sweat, and gasp
for air ;o)
