Problem installing SP1a Not logged in -   Reply

I have FSX installed on drive D: but the install appears to be restricted to
drive C: The install tells me to install FSX first then Quits! How do I
overcome this?

Thanks

I don't have FSX myself but this is usually a problem when you are not
consciously reading everything on the screen. We've all done that more than
once, it's a natural human disorder to take everything written as an
uneditable fact. Third-Party installers sometimes have this bug - MS,
wouldn't do that.

Make sure that you open (click on!) every list-box in the dialog and I
expect you will find that the
one that says:
C:\somepath\
can be expanded into showing all the other available drives on your system.
Just navigate to your location from there.

Some things need to sit on the system drive (C:) - I am not aware if the
patches in the SP has this requirement? I would expect it to update the FS
system folder and that you should have the opportunity to navigate to your
own installation. Anything beyond that, the installer will sort it out on
it's own. So, study all the parts of that dialog.

Have you moved any personal folders, such as "my documents" since you
instaled FSX?

FSX puts files in multiple locations, not just program files, and the SP1a
install is probably looking for and checking for the existance of a
particular componant path; which it subsequently can't find.

I had it installed on drive "L" and it did not work. I un-installed it and
put a fresh install in drive "D" but still the same response. SP1 will only
install to drive "D" but SP1Aa only wants "C". It seems beyond me!

All is OK folks. If I could read AND understand what the failed
installationwas telling me, I would have had no problems. Thanks to those who
offered assistance.

Why can't the installation program figure out the correct drive from the
registry?

Some do that, of course, but it's not always that simple - you may have
orphaned keys for uninstalled programs sitting in the reg. and MS programs
usually start off by offering the default path and everything else then
assume you have it installed there. I'm sometimes cought by this trap myself
when I re-install things I believe I know well, and not reading everything
just clicking O.K. and ending up with multiple installations. (Hrmph!)

It is also not really obvious what you are doing, because listboxes almost
always have a distinct frame and an arrow to the right, but the one I often
find in FS installations is looking like a single object listbox - it isn't
obvious that there are any options to chose from until you click it!
