Cameron, I assume you're using FS9 (FS2004) as some of these are rather old
now and may not work well in FSX. I can only comment on the Dash 8 and the
A340 Professional, both of which were originally developed for FS2002, then
upgraded for FS2004. They have FMCs and, as far as I know, are autoland
capable although I'm not too sure of the Dash 8 as I've never tried it.

This brings me to my next point. I'm curious as to why you are so keen on
doing autolands in the sim. There is nothing really marvellous about a
computerised simulation making a computer model of a plane do an automatic
landing! It's nowhere near the achievement of the real thing doing it! Also
bear in mind that in RL, the vast majority of landings are manual. Smile

From what I understand, the Pilot will disconnect the AP at about 1000' MSL
and bring it on home on there own.

Anybody who is or was a RW Pilot would be able to give more correct
information about this. Oskar, any comments??

Yeah, right. Usually the approach is flown manually. However don't forget
that commercial flying is not necessarily comparable to "flying for fun" all
the time. Although most pilots really enjoy manual flying it is highly
adviseable that in high density traffic areas the A/P is used as extenisvely
as possible just to keep workload low. Even if it would be great fun to fly
manually over Lake Erie into O'Hare I would rather stick to A/P and be able
to support the copilots work (or v.v.). These are the parts where flying
really becomes a piece of hard work rather than enjoyable fun.... Smile))

Maybe more like 200' AGL, 1000' MSL wont work so good at a 1200' MSL
runway...

manual/autolandings [In reply to "Cameron Peters"] Not logged in -   Reply

even ILS Landings are partly flown by hand. I usually let the GPS align the a/c to the runway and i take over, if the weather is not good i select the Nav mode when i'm roughly in line with the runway and track the ILS beam down the runway centreline to the threshold. I adjust height with the joystick as the altitude hold switch is not engaged.
