But up to the intercept you can have the AP hold the altitude. Just like the heading - upon glideslope capture the altitude light will turn off. I usually turn on the approach about 30 nm out at anywhere from 4000 to 6000 feet agl and a speed of less than 250knots (remember, in the US you need to be at 250 knots or less under 10,000 feet!!). The localizer usually captures the heading around 28 nm out and the glideslope a bit less than 20. -=tom=-
