Saitek - Pro Flight YOKE System Not logged in -   Reply

Fellow simmers:

My CH USB LE yoke broke and I'm thinking of buying this yoke system to
replace it. It's on back order now but should be delivered after Nov 15.
What are your thoughts about this item? Has anyone else placed an order for
it?
Thanks for all replies. maven

Funny, I was just thinking about that product today.

Nobody here has one yet... you'll be the first... please tell us what you
think when yours comes in.

Funny me too!

I too was thinking of this as a replacement for my CH Yoke. I also like the
look of the throttles for price for the two is very good.

Let us know how you get on with it!

I've had the Pro Yoke system along with an additional throttle unit
for a couple of weeks now.

I've only used it a few thimes so far, primarily due to the fact
that I have a X-45 stick/throttle with all my FS9\FSX\Aces High
profiles that give me pretty much a full HOTAS and I rarely have
to go to the keyboard.

The Saitek Pro Yoke\throttle doesn't give me as many options
for control features and the X-45 software\profiles are not
compatible with the Pro series.

I use bot systems connected simultaneously and program the
Pro Yoke\throttle functions through the FSX controls menu
since I haven't installed the Saitek software for that system.

This configuration lets me use the Pro yoke\throttles for
flight and engine controls while allowing me to still use
the switches\buttons\hats on my X-45 for all the programmable
functions. It's a bit of a kludge arrangement but one that I
prefer until Saitek comes up with a conversion program to allow
me to translate my X-45 profiles to be compatible with the Pro
system ( I will need to update the X-45 driovers at thattime ).

The biggest negative I have concerning the Pro system is the
rathet large and klunky attachment mechanisms that take up alot
of space under the mounting surface.
I got around this by investing in some 3/4" velcro spools
( 2 x 3/4" x 15' ) and applied sevearl strips to the throttles
and yoke. I then put the other 'sex" of the velcro strips on my
control mounting surfaces.

The yoke replaces my keyboard area, with the X-45 stick on
the right and X-45 throttle on the left. The keyboard then
sits on top of the yoke main unit, which is fairly large.

I placed the throttles on top of my "dead" #3 desktop computer
case, which sits on the floor and places the throttles at a
convenient height.

As for the switches on the throttle units, they are position below
the throttles and are a bit difficult to use without fumbling around
with the trottle units placed well below eye level.

Flying multi-engine FSX aircraft is pretty immersive using the
twin throttle units set up with the 4 engine throttle in the
middle, flanked by the pitch and mixture controls.

Taxiing is a breeze now using a combination of thrust changes
on all engines and thrust increases\decreases on outboard
engines to make the turns at taxiway junctions.

The switches on the yoke are quite usable but the view hat is
now on the reverse hand from what I am used to with the X-45.
Since I use TrackIR4 this isn't such a big issue as I use the
#2 hat on the X-45 to switch camera views ( right seat\overhead\
pedestal ) and can't put those functions on the yoke until I install
the Saitek software.

The USB cable from the yoke, which has a built in 3-port USB
hub, could be a bit longer, IMO.

All in all, it was a worthwhile investment\addition to my flight
sim environment and once the X-45 profiles can be converted to work
with the Pro system sofware, it will be much more adaptable for
my situation.

As a "stand alone" setup for those replacing their current HOTAS,
you'll need to make some adjustments and to fully replace the
functions on your old HOTAS you will need to load the Saitek software
and make use of the 3 modes available ( selectable by a switch on
the yoke ) on the yoke\throttles.

As for the Yoke\Throttle system without the additional throttle unit,
the throttle that comes with the yoke uses a "proprietary" connector
to plug into the yoke...not a standard USB connector. This means that
if you only want the throttle functions in some cases ( as I do ) you
will still need to have the yoke plugged into your system.

The standalone throttle unit, OTOH, comes with a standard USB connector
so it can be used without the Pro Yoke.

If all you want are throttle and engine controls, you might consider
just buying 1 ( or two ) throttle units.

Paul
