Still Have Memory Leak with FSX Acceleration Not logged in -   Reply

On top of a nasty memory leak in FSX SP2 / Acceleration that eventually
causes the computer to run out of memory, now I find that all of my in
flight videos recorded under SP1 simply blow up on loading in SP2. Not a
happy camper.

Are there certain conditions that need to exist to see this memory leak?

The memory leak has always been in FSX, but with the performance
improvements in SP1 & SP2, you can increase the scenery density
and have a greater chance of having the out of memory issue.
Road traffic is the biggest offender. As vehicles appear on the
screen they obviously use memory, but that memory is not
released quickly on their disappearance. Very dense autogen
also tends to stay after out of view. If you want to try it, fly
the Lear at about 2000' AGL at 250 Kts over a densly populated
area following an interstate for about a half hour, len land at a major
airport and use F12 for the top down view and zoom out. For example:
With everything maxed, take off from NY, La Guardia in the Lear,
fly out to the end of Long Island at 2000' AGL, while staying over
the most dense autogen and road traffic, at 250 kts. Do a 180, fly
back to KLGA, land, and press F12 and zoom far out, then back in.
What happens is you're collecting objects in memory faster than
FSX releases them, until you run out of available memory. The
top down view is the final straw.

Even with 3 or 4 GB of RAM this can happen because only 2 GB
of virtual addressing space is available for applications, and FSX
isn't the only user of this space. Usually occurs when fsx.exe
exceeds 1.7 GB.

If I could define that, I would surely publish the settings that would stop
the leaks. I changed *nothing* going from SP1 to SP2. SP1 was not leaking
quickly. SP2 is leaking memory quickly and even 30 to 60 minutes of
simulation is enough to send FSX into the graveyard.

Is is something related to my Nvidia driver release level? Perhaps. I'm
just annoyed that now I have to go through yet another cycle of tweaking
instead of flying.

I am sure, that has to be very annoying.
I think the longest flight I have run so far, after SP2, is app 1.5 hours. I
have not had it crash yet, will try some longer ones in the days ahead and
see what happens.

Leave Task Manager running on the performance tab, and set the updates to
minimum. That will show a graph at bottom with memory consumption. As
soon as you leave FSX go to that tab right away and see where did the system
maximize its use of memory, or occasionally go to that tab during gameplay
to check on status.

With SP1, I rarely got FSX above one GB of virtual memory. With FSX it
just keeps climbing and somewhere just over 1.2 GB it becomes catastrophic.

It would be good to hear others say that they don't see that phenomena with
SP2, because if they don't then perhaps I simply need an upgrade of video
drivers.

I've noticed that FSX does use more memory after the Acceleration Pack
installation. I don't think the leak itself is any greater, but added to
the extra
memory usage, is enough to cause a memory crash under previously
survivable circumstances. Another thing, is that you are not running out
of physical RAM, but out of available virtual addressing space. It could
also be due to memory fragmentation, with a lack of sufficiently large
contiguous empty blocks for the application's requirements.

I will try to test this, on my system, in the same way over the holiday
weekend.
