Can somebody explain what is meant by Tailhook? It is sometimes seen as
a command for some animation on an aircraft model..(i.e. Open exit =
Shift E). I have always been puzzled by this.

On 11/21/2007 8:50 AM, Dallas went clickity clack on the keyboard and
produced this interesting bit of text:

To elucidate further, it's a hook that comes out of the tail of a plane
rigged to land on an aircraft carrier. The hook catches an arrester
cable and slows the plane a lot faster than it could on its own.

As an aside, it's also a club in the U.S. Navy made up of carrier pilots.

Tailhook is the name of the hook, mounted at the rear end of carrier planes,
and its there to grab the wires at the start of the landing strip, to make
the plane stop, before exiting the carrierdeck unintendedly.

The function is used in MSFS on some models, for activating addon
animations, like ground service etc., or for opening the tailgate on C130's.

You may need to set it in the "Controls\Buttons\Keys" menu
in FSX.

I believe Acceleration is using "Shift+Q" as default to
toggle the tailhook.

After reading all the postings, some more wordy than others, Dallas was
proven correct . . . yet again!

You can set the 'tailhook' keyboard short in your keyboard assignment
section.

Naval aviators and aircrew to be exact.
