Viewing controls that meet our needs Not logged in -   Reply

hello

all the flight sims i know share a common problem

the view controls do not mimic the head movements of a real pilot

combined with the typical computer monitor small rectangle makes
flying sims very awkward

it seems to me that pilots are mostly interested in looking at the
horizon

and when they want to look up that is "world up" not "plane up"

so that looking left and right should follow the horizon
looking ahead should look at the horizon in the direction the plane is
pointing
looking up and down should cause the view to rotate around the current
views x axis to the worlds up vector
combining this with a simple lock view toggle
whilst you are looking at something - say the reference point on an
airfield
you hit the lock view button
the software projects the current view vector to the first object of
interest (could be a cloud another plane etc.)
and then keeps the view locked on to that
if during lock view it is not physically possible to see the target
the view slides back to over the nose and then swings back to the
target when possible
toggling the lock view switches to the "over the nose" view

i have been looking for a FSX CONDOR XPLANE ELITE FS2004 add on which
might provide something similar

but have not found anything

does anybody else see the need for this ?

john

Hi John,

Well, I have FSX, and Acceleration, installed, and running without any
problems, but I haven't really run it much - I'm reserving that for when
I've finished building a new PC (STILL waiting on delivery of a graphics
card, sheesh).

So I'll only comment re FS9.

TrackIR is the best thing since sliced bread, but, of course, it only
makes the situation pretty real, to my non-real-life pilot mind, in the 3D
cockpit.

That leaves a problem for me, since a couple of my favourite aircraft
only have 2D cockpits...

I'm running a Dell 30" widescreen monitor, so I have a pretty reasonable
field of view, and I still have a Dell 24" widescreen, which I could run
along with the other one, but it would take one helluva PC to run them both,
even though that would give me extra view options.

So, in my opinion, Simming will never be the same as real-life flying,
re the views, and we just have to "get used to it". Smile

At the moment, I think Bobbie (C6, or Copter6) has about the best setup
possible, with today's hardware, as he actually gets to experience/feel some
real/three-dimensional/seat of the pants movement......

Regards,
John Ward

I agree, TrackIR is what he needs.

This motion sim is getting better now that I can again hover a
helicopter. Every time I change controls I have to learn all over again.

I have a real problem though. FSX won't run more than 5 minutes now
without a blue screen. I haven't even re-installed it (FSX) since the
last major crash. FS9 will run for 20 minutes or so before Vista tells
me "FS9 has quit working" (Well, tell me something I don't know!!!!) or
I get a blue screen.

As soon as I figure out which hard drive I need to buy I'll get
something I can install XP on. I don't know if it's Vista causing the
problems because some of the blue screen text tells me it's a hardware
failure. Maybe it's the disk that Vista's on, but I pretty much hate
Vista now. Once I get XP back I'll trash that Vista disk. Wish me
luck.....

Hi Bobbie,

Google "memory leak", mate, and let us all know the results.

I think I can help you...

I hope so.... Guess what just happened... I'm checking mail on my P4
because the new machine won't connect to the web now and things just
start failing, programs that aren't even running. Anyway, I started
both machines at the same time and the new one was just sitting there,
no programs running, and suddenly... Blue Screen. I caught a bit of the
text

Something like

"Page fault in no page data" Those may not have been the correct words.

I really would like to start flying FSX again, any help would be
appreciated.

Hi Bob,

O.K., stay tuned, although I'm no hardware expert, mate.

My initial thought is that you have a flaky mobo. Can you get it tested,
for free, if its still under warranty? Same for your RAM?

The answer is no. My favorite computer repair seems to have closed.
I'll have to find someone I can trust. They could tell me anything is
wrong and I wouldn't know the diff.... Smile

I did that. I tried several drivers with no positive results. I may
try again.

I blv it may be a video card driver, I had a similar message when I ran FSX
with ATi drivers released at about the time FSX was new. Updated drivers
fixed it.

You C6 are infectious! I was just having a poodle in FS9 CYVR - PAJN in the
PMDG 737-600
when POOF. Blue screen, page fault and gobbledegook briefly displayed, then
black screen, forced reboot as PC would not respond. Report - Windows has
recovered from a serious problemo would you like to send this
incomprehensible report to MS who will file it away and do nothing? Don't
bother.
Aaaarrghhh

AAkkkk!! Sorry.... I know the feeling you get when the blue screen
pops up 3 or 4 times a flight. I did send the reports to MS and thought
it did some good when I got a message saying they had a fix for my
problem. I downloaded what they sent and installed it. The crash was so
bad I had to completely re-install Vista.
